Catharine Echols
Paulding New
Era July 3, 1885 In Memoriam. Entered into rest on the 7th of June,
1885 my beloved mother, Catharine Echols, aged 80 years, 5 months and 3
days. Since the death of her husband, my father, who died a little over
two years ago, she has been gradually failing in health and strength,
but quite so during this spring; but she was able to walk about the
house until about four days before her death, and we hoped that she
would regain her usual strength, but the Lord saw fit to order it
otherwise. She was taken violently ill on the evening of the 3rd day of
June, and the next morning seemed to be better; but she gradually grew
weaker, until half after one o'clock Saturday night, when she passed
form the stage of action, in a sweet sleep of death. She has gone to
realize the strange realities of a world unknown to us. I remember when
I was young, whenever ma would at any time be in feeble health, I would
look into her face and hope that I would die before she would; but it
pleased God to arrange it differently, and I am left here a poor orphan
boy to think of the past and mourn over the death of my old father and
mother, although I am over forty years old myself. She and father both
belonged to the old school, or Primitive Baptist Church. At her burial
Elder Isaac Moon was present and officiated. He made one of the ablest
prayers that I ever heard, and have a comforting talk to us children,
and to the friends of ma. She was baptized in the year 1848, by Elder
Josiah Gresham, and remained a consistent member of that faith until her
death. As a wife, she was faithful and kind, as a mother, she was all
____. Her death has left a loneliness in my house, but I would not wish
her back in this ________. She leaves five children to mourn her death.
T.R. Echols.

L.R. Jarmon, Who Did Shooting, Freed ‘by Justice of Peace—Reward Is
Offered for Capture. Acworth, Ga., November 25. In an altercation of
several months’ standing, L.R. Jarmon, aged 40, shot and instantly
killed E.A. Ellison, aged 30, this morning at 9 o’clock, at Cross Roads,
in Paulding county, near Acworth. It is stated that Ellison had insulted
one of Jarmon’s daughters some time ago, and the matter had been carried
to court, and this was the primary cause of the trouble. The only
eyewitness to the tragedy was Dolf Blackman, who states that he was
talking to Ellison in the road when Jarmon approached with his hand in
his inside coat pocket. After approaching within three feet of Ellison
he opened fire, shooting Ellison five times, several times in the head.
He gave up to Justice of the Peace Jim Foster, who deputized a neighbor,
R.A. Abney, to whom he turned over the prisoner. It is stated that Abney
allowed the prisoner to return home and to talk freely with friends, and
that while allowed his freedom he made his escape. He has not been
recaptured. Jarmon is a man with a family. Ellison leaves a wife and two
small children. Friends of Ellison are offering a reward for the capture

Grandmamma Foster

16, 1889, the spirit of grandmamma Foster winged its flight from earth
having us in darkness - while her spirit lifted away in the dawn of a
new day to the dwelling of light now made with hands, eternal, in the
Heaven." She was 82 years of age, and may it be said of her, "she _____,

will live in the hearts of those who loved her forever. To say that we
miss her is but a feeble expression of the overwhelming sadness of those
of us who from day to day saw her so gently and quiet in her accustomed
seat, she was a loving and kind mother and grandmother, and a friend to
all, ever ready to befriend and assist in her last days when she
suffered so much "with smiles concealed her pain." The many loved ones
who have "Gone before" were, I think waking at the "Beautiful Gate" to
welcome her to the "City of Light" and now her voice mingles with
theirs, singing "Heavens to the King."…

Miss Lela Foster
Paulding
New Era 13 Feb 1885 Dallas cemetery
Miss Lela, the fourteen year old
daughter of Dr. T.J. Foster, died, after an illness of about six months,
last Sunday morning at 6 o’clock. She was an exceedingly interesting
young girl, of a gentle and winning disposition. Before her sickness she
was the impersonation of ___ health, which gave promise of a long and
useful life, but the “cell disease” laid hold of her young life and
never relinquished its grasp until it had claimed it as its own. During
her long illness she bore her suffering with a fortitude above what
could be expected of one of her age; and when she was brought to realize
that she had not much longer to remain on earth, she fixed all her
thoughts on heaven and calmly awaited the final summons to join her
beloved mother, who had so shortly preceded her, in that land where
there will be no more sickness nor sorrowing pain nor death. She was
buried at the Dallas cemetery Monday evening, surrounded by a large
number of her playmates and friends of the family; and as the words of
the pastor, W.R. Dale, recalled the sadness of the death of one so young
and the bereavement of the family who have in so short a time lost a
mother and a sister, a wife and a daughter, the tear of sympathy welled
to the eye of nearly everyone present.

Mr. J. Monroe Gray
Paulding New Era 28 Feb
1884 Mr. Monroe Gray, Justice of the Peace of Humphrys district, in
this county, died of typhoid fever Thursday evening about two o’clock.
Mr. Gray leaves a wife and three children, and numerous friends and
relatives, to mourn his loss.
The New Era, in common with the entire
community, extends its sympathies to the bereaved family.
**************************
15 May 1884
J.M. Gray, Esq., who
departed this life February 28th, 1884, was faithfully attended by his
physician, Dr. Foster. But it pleased God to take his own to himself, to
which he was perfectly reconciled while he was expiring on soft and
downy pillows. He called to his loving wife, who was trying to hide her
inward anguish, and said: “Weep not for me, follow my footsteps; raise
my children right; pay my just debts and may we all meet in heaven where
we’ll be able to sing the song of Moses and the lamb.” His father was
present though he was burdened with a load of years and grief. He talked
to him some questioning him to look after the welfare of his wife and
children. He bid his neighbors and friends farewell who were present;
returned his thanks to them for waiting on him so faithfully, and said
he wanted Bro. Moon to exercise at the grave. We heard him say he wanted
case, but God’s will be done and not mine. We have been acquainted with
J.M. Gray from his youth. He was about 34 years of age, six of which was
spent in following the footsteps of Jesus. He indeed adorned the
profession he made by a God like walk and a pious conversation. We
believe he was one that fought the good fight, that kept the faith; was
ready to be delivered up and receive the crown God gives to all who
loves His appearing. He appeared to welcome death, which is the gate to
endless joy. The widow is living with her only brother, who is
cheerfully looking after her interest as he was requested to do by the
deceased. Mr. Charley Baggett is certainly complying with his request.
–A Friend.

Green, Jim
The Daily Constitution Atlanta,
GA January 12, 1895 Green, Jim
Wanted for Murder. Emma Hale, a
young mulatto woman, who is wanted in Paulding county for murder, was
brought to Atlanta last night by Deputy Sheriff Furr, who captured her
yesterday morning in Jonesboro. She will be taken to Dallas this
morning, where she will be tried with her husband for the murder of Jim
Green.
The killing of Green was one of the most mysterious crimes
ever committed in the mountains of north Georgia. He was a well known
and highly respectable negro farmer, who lived several miles from
Dallas. In politics he was known to have much influence among his race.
About the middle of September last he suddenly disappeared. It was
supposed by his family that he had gone to another county to visit
relatives, but weeks passed and he failed to return.
Then his
friends suspected foul play and every effort was made to secure some
clue as to what had become of him. He was last seen the man said that he
was going over to see Hamp Hale, an old negro man who lived a few miles
from his farm. since that night nothing has been seen of him, but Hale
and his wife, who was much younger than her husband, declared that he
had not been there and said that they had not seem him that night.
Nothing was ever heard of King, but the negroes suspected Hale and his
wife, as it was known that they had had dealings with the missing man
which had caused bad feeling.
About December 1st a discovery was
made that threw the whole neighborhood into a frenzy of excitement. A
small colored boy while crossing an old field not far from the house
where hale lived found the remains of a man who seemed to have been dead
several months in a deep gully. the news spread and the negroes from
miles around flocked to the place to see what had been identified from
the clothes as the skeleton of Jim Green.
When examined by the
coroner’s jury it was found that the skull had been crushed in seemingly
with an ax or some blunt weapon. Hale and his wife were arrested at
once, but the jury ordered the woman released, as there was nothing to
show that she was connected with the murder. Immediately after her
acquittal she left the county and it was not known in what direction she
had fled.
This flight confirmed the suspicions of those who thought
that she had helped kill Green and the sheriff was ordered to located
and rearrest her. Deputy Sheriff Furr got on her track, and learning
that she was staying near Jonesboro, left for that place. He found her
yesterday.
The woman is far above the ordinary darky, both in her
appearance and her manner. She denies that she had anything to do with
the killing, but her account will criminate her husband and put his neck
in peril. “I didn’t kill Green,” she said last night. “My husband might
have done it, but I didn’t know anything about it. Green was at our
house that night and I heard my husband cuss him and tell him to leave.
That was all I heard. My husband left the house that night after Green
had left, but I can’t say where he went. “The next day he said he had
done a thing that he was sorry for, but I didn’t ask him any questions.
It must have been that murder that he was talking about. It couldn’t
have been anything else. That woman said that Green had been living at
their house and her husband had driven him away because of jealousy.”
She will be carried back to Paulding this morning.

22nd A. D., 1851, and departed this life September 24, 1890. Billy, (as

Of this union were born seven children. Five sons and two daughters, of
which all are living except Fanny. She crossed over the river one year
before her father.
Billy was a consistent member of the Baptist
church. He lived a peaceful life, and set many good examples for his
children and friends to imitate. For the last several months of his life
he was unwell, but not confined to his bed but a short time. He bore all
his afflictions with Christian forbearance and at last was perfectly
submissive to Lord's will. Fully realizing that he was soon to pass the
dark valley. He said, Pa! I am going to a better world than this.
Billy left many friends to mourn his loss. We should be like Job when in
all his affliction he said the Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away;
blessed be the name of the Lord. Nature says we must soon follow and we
know of a truth that we must all die. Blessed are they that die in the
Lord. Our Loss is his eternal gain. S.D.D.

Hicks, John
The Daily Constitution Atlanta, GA
October 4, 1879 Hicks, John
A Paulding County Tragedy;
From
a private source was learned yesterday of the mysterious killing of John
Hicks, a resident of Paulding county, who was found dead Wednesday last
in the woods a few miles from Dallas.
Mr. Hicks, it seems, had gone
out hunting the day previous and by reason of his not returning his
friends started out in search of him and found his corpse laying in the
woods with a bullet hole through his body.
As yet no one knows who
killed him, but suspicion points to Jerry Shelton, a resident of Dallas,
as the guilty party, owing to the fact that it was pretty generally
known that these two men were on bad terms and that Shelton was a man of
gad character and has not been seen since the murder was committed.
Hicks was considered a peaceable man and a good citizen. He leaves a
wife, whom we learn was insulted a few days since by Shelton. This was
the cause of the hard feeling that existed between the two. The deceased
and Shelton had a meeting a few days before the mysterious death of the
former which came very near being a serious affair. Shelton, it seems,
has a very bad record in the community in which he lives. A few years
since he and his brother, Poke Shelton, had a difficulty with Bud
Puckett in a saloon in Dallas, which culminated in the killing of
Puckett. The two men were arrested and sent to jail, where they remained
only a short while when they gave a sufficient bond and were released
from custody.
When the cases of these two men were called, Poke
Shelton was tried and found guilty and sentenced to five years
imprisonment in the penitentiary service. He is now working on the
Cartersville and Van Wert railroad with a number of convicts at work
there.
In some way counsel for the defense in the case against Jerry
Shelton managed to stave off the trial, and the defendant remained on
bond until a few weeks since, when he was arrested for carrying
concealed weapons, tried and fined for the offense. He remained in the
jail about ten days before he was able to pay his fine, and was out
about one week previous to the time of the killing of Hicks. It is said
that it was during this interval of one week that he made the insulting
remarks to Hicks’s wife, which is said to have been the cause of the
enmity that existed between the two men. The residents of Paulding, and
especially those in the vicinity of Dallas, feel highly incensed at the
murder, as Hicks was much liked by every one. Every effort will be made
to solve the mystery and find out the guilty party. If it is ascertained
that Shelton did the killing, efforts will be made to secure his arrest,
and if arrested, he will have to defend himself in the criminal
prosecution for murder at the next term of Paulding superior court.
11 Oct 1879 (The Daily Constitution - Atlanta} The Killing of Hicks in
Paulding; We learn from parties who are in the city from Paulding county
that it is a thought that Mr. Hicks, who was killed a few days ago in
the woods in that county, shot himself accidentally, and that Mr. Jerry
Shelton had nothing to do with it. It appears from their statement that
Mr. Shelton, at the time of the shooting was nowhere near the place.
While there had been a difference between them, it was not sufficient,
so it is reported, to cause any serious breach between them. It is
thought by many that Mr. Hicks accidentally shot himself while in the
woods gathering chinquapins.

and killing Mr. Bud Hilburn, the nigh watchman, blowing him into atoms
and throwing him a hundred yards from the engine. The duties of Hilburn
were to watch the mill at night and to fire up and blow up the hands of
a morning. The explosion was announced about twenty minutes past 3
o'clock, and at thirty minutes past 3 o'clock was the time to blow up
the hands. It is supposed that he built the fire in the engine and then
went to sleep and let the steam run too high, and the explosion
followed. The loss to the proprietors was about one thousand dollars.

room, two in number, heard the shooting and called in a policeman; and
on opening the door it was found that Tony was dead and Bob was dying.
It is evident that in a scuffle Bob shot Tony through the arm and

Cuma Hitchcock
Paulding New Era 13 Mar
1885 A Shocking Accident. One of the most heart wrenching accidents
which we were ever called upon to chronicle, occurred on the plantation
of Squire Jesse Hitchcock, in Pumpkinvine district, last Monday evening.
A new ground was being burned off, and the family were watching the fire
to keep it from doing any mischief. At one point it followed up the dry
leaves and sedge till it reached the fence. Cuma, the fourteen year old
daughter of Squire Hitchcock, observed it and started to climb over the
fence to arrest its progress. When she was on the fence the flames
leaped up and caught her skirts. When she realized that her clothing was
on fire she became panic stricken and ran screaming towards the house.
Her mother and sister Lee, aged sixteen, ran to her assistance, and
succeeded in stripping the burning garments from her, but in doing so
had their hands and arms badly burned. She was taken to the house and
Dr. W.C. Connally sent for. When the doctor arrived he found that the
condition of Cuma was very critical, at least two-thirds of the surface
of her whole body being burned to a crisp, and that the right hand of
Lee was so badly burned that it would be deformed if not entirely lost,
while Mrs. Hitchcock’s hands were painfully burned. He dressed the
burns, and administered all the known remedies to relieve the pain. Cuma
lingered in great pain till Wednesday evening, when death came to her
relief. The others are doing as well as could be expected.

Mr. James Hogan
Paulding New Era May 28, 1886
Mr. James Hogan, an old and highly respected citizen of Paulding
county, died from cancer on the 25th inst. He was interred at New Hope
on Wednesday with Masonic honors.
June 25, 1886
Dallas Lodge, No
182. F.A.M. June 12, 1886. To the W. Master and Brothers of the craft.
Your committee appointed on the 25th of May last to prepare a suitable
memorial on the life and character of our deceased brother James Hogan,
who departed this life on the 26th ult., of our Lodge, beg leave to
present the following reports. Another one of our Brotherhood is dead.
Once more the Masonic robes have given place to the winding sheet and
the pale habiliments of the grave. From this vigilant and active
earthly Lodge, one more brother's body has gone down to the dismal
confines of the narrow house, and his spirit from rendering service in
this our earthly Lodge has gone to the celestial Lodge above to receive
his reward from the great master of the universe. Brother James Hogan
is no more, yet in our memories he still has an abiding place, and in
this Lodge where all of his active labors were performed we come to
offer to his memory the sincere tribute of brotherly love and esteem,
and let it go down to the craft who may come after us along with the
record he has made form himself and our order.
He was born in
Union county, S.C., and made this county his home by adoption several
years before the late war, and many years ago was here made a mason. He
had two wives to precede him to that land from whence no traveler has
ever returned. His last wife survives him, together with several
children, to mourn his loss. He was near seventy-three years of age at
the time of his death and was also a consistent member of the M.E.
church, where he was a devoted member and brother. In his death we are
reminded that the individual members of our craft may die, but that the
tenets of our order still live. Many who witnessed his first work as a
Mason have gone like him to the celestial Lodge above, but still the
principles he and they loved so well are practiced by us and a host of
our fellow men all over the inhabited globe; and we hope will be as long
as one worthy man can be found in search of light.
Our brother was
laid to rest with Masonic honors at New Hope church, on the 26th day of
May, 1886, at his own desire and request; and , in conclusion, we can
only point to him with pride as a model for the imitation of the younger
members of the craft. Resolved, that in the death of Brother James
Hogan this lodge has lost a shining mark, the church a devoted
Christian, and our state and county an honest citizen. Resolved
further, that this report be entered upon the minutes of this lodge.
Respectfully Submitted, J.M. Spinks, J.R. Moon, W.I. Fain.

Mamie Hope
Paulding New Era 20 Sept 1883 The
Era is pained to learn that little Mamie, aged 1 year 2 mo and 10 days,
infant daughter of Mr. R.M. and Mrs. S.O. Hope, of Rockmart, is no more
in this life. The death scene is said to have been very affecting.
Little Mamie, awakened back to human consciousness by the deep agonizing
sobs of a heart broken mother, threw her child arms about her mothers
neck, and implanting a last kiss upon her trembling lips, breathed her
life out sweetly there. We have not the space for the obituary in full
and must be content with this notice, and offer our sympathies to the
bereaved father and mother in this, their sorrow.

S.W. Howard
Paulding New Era November 1, 1889
Died. At Rest. Dallas, Ga. Oct the 25th , 1889. Whereas in the
dispensation of providence, it has pleased the Great Architect of the
universe to remove from our midst our beloved brother S.W. Howard who
sudden death has cast a gloom over family and friends, and left an
aching void that cannot be filled; therefore be it resolved that in his
death that Dallas Lodge No. 182 F. and A.M. of which he was a most
exemplary member has lost one of it's brightest jewels, the state a
patriotic citizen, the community a cherished model, his family a kind
and loving companion and guardian. That while we point with pride and
pleasure to his character as a mason, we take greater consolation in
contemplating a character absolutely void of odence(?). We hold it up as
being in many respect, well worthy of imitation by the fraternity he
honored and adored…

Mr. Ben Howell
Paulding New Era July 10, 1891
Died. Mr. Ben Howell, who would have been 20 years of age the 5th day
of next November, departed this life on the 18th of last June, and was
laid to rest in Mt. Olivet cemetery on the following day, after funeral
services conducted by J.M. Spinks, many tears of grief and sorrow were
shed. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas J. Howell, and was the
youngest child of a large family of children. He was like almost the
youngest of the family, the pet of the household, but very unlike them
in another respect, it had no tendency to elevate him above the balance
of the family in his own estimation, but he seemed to understand fully
his duty to parents and to the brothers and only sister. He was large
and manly, with a disposition as kind and gentle as a woman. It is now a
great source of pleasure and consolation to his bereaved father, that he
had never caused him any trouble, but that he had been a dutiful and
obedient son. Though young he like many others of the stronger part of
God's creation had learned to admire and love one, that was as he
thought worthy of his love and young manhood and following that love he
had married a lovely wife and all bid fair for a long and happy life and
to add to there fond expectations less than a month before his death his
home was blessed with a beautiful little girl and no doubt that he
thought, that the sunlight of Providence was shedding its brightest rays
upon him. But how wonderful are the ways of Providence, they are passed
finding out, at an hour when least expected his strong manhood was cut
off his life was taken, for the time had came when it should be required
of him. Oh, what a loss, who gloom and sorrow it brought the picture is
not to be described by pen and paper, even the tongue can't speak the
sorrow and woe of the widow's heart, the father's spirit and the
mother's soul along can feel how deep the cup of sorrow is. But so it is
as long as we journey here below it will be trouble on ever hand, but
let those that are cast down with sadness and sorrow raised their eyes
to our Father's house…

Mrs. Betsy Hudson
Paulding New Era 21 Feb
1884 Mrs. Wesley Hudson fell dead from her chair last Saturday night.
It is not known what was the cause.
****************
A Sudden
Death. Written for the New Era.
Old Aunt Betsy Hudson, the wife of
old Uncle Wesley Hudson, on the 16th of this inst.
After eating her
supper as heartily as usual, went into the other room and took her seat
by the fire and struck her feet out to warm them, and told some of the
family to hand her the camphor. The old man reached on the mantle and
gave her the camphor bottle. She swallowed a little of it and it seemed
to strangle her. The old man turned off to weaken the camphor a little,
and she was dead in five minutes.
She was an old mother that
everybody liked that was acquainted with her. She had been a consistent
and orderly member of the church to something like fifty years, and was
a devoted Christian, and while she is dead here and taken from our midst
we believe that she is alive spiritually, though we all sympathize with
old Uncle Wesley and all the bereaved family.

Eldred Huff
January 25, 1934 - October 16, 2004
The Dallas New Era Thursday October 21, 2004
Services Held For Mr.
Eldred Huff Oct. 19
Eldred Huff, age 70, passed through Heaven’s
gates on the afternoon of Saturday, October 16, 2004. He was born in
Atlanta, Georgia on January 25, 1934, to Eulas Virgil and Clifton Cleo
Crawford Huff. After losing his father at age 13, Eldred continued in
school at Bass High School until he joined the U. S. Navy at age 17.
Eldred was proud of the education he gained as a weatherman in the Navy
during the Korean conflict and was inspired by that education to pursue
a career in engineering. He soon began a career with Southern Bell
Telephone Company as a Frameman and quickly rose through the ranks to
hold the title of Vice President of Engineering. During his tenure at
Southern Bell, Eldred participated in the development of the
communications network for the first Shuttle Missions. Following 30
years of service to Southern Bell/AT & T, Eldred retired in 1984. During
and following tenure with Southern Bell, Eldred was also involved in
many personal and community pursuits. He read books and learned how to
build a house, which he did with his family during the 1970’s. He was
active in the Masons and ultimately became a Shriner. He was very proud
of the work Shriner’s do for sick and injured children and their
families and participated as much and for as long as his time allowed.
He also became a member of the Buchanan Lions Club, eventually taking
the role of President, the Zone Chairman for the area.
One of
Eldred’s proudest accomplishments was his participation as a co-founder
of Carroll Sav-A-Life, a non-profit crisis pregnancy center in
Carrollton, Georgia. He was alarmed by the teenage pregnancy rates in
Carrollton, and unlike most of us, chose to do something about it. God
has saved countless lives through this organization and it remains a
memorial to the fact that few can accomplish much when God is involved.
Once he was comfortable that Carroll Sav-A-Life was fully functioning,
eldred became involved with the Gideons International, an organization
of Christian men who work to place God’s Word in the hands of every
person in the world. The membership ultimately elected Eldred as State
President of the Georgia Gideons and he served faithfully in the post
for three years. During his time with the Gideons, Eldred developed a
heart for the people of South America and spent time in Chile and
Argentina working to get the Spanish Bible in the hands of the people
there. During this time, Eldred was also ordained as a Deacon in the
First Baptist Church of Bremen, Georgia as an Elder in the First
Presbyterian Church of Villa Rica, Georgia PCA.
Eldred believed in
the importance of Christian people getting in volved in their local
government. He knew that a Christian nation only remains so when
Christian people are willing to get their hands dirty. So, a member of
the Haralson County GOP, Eldred once more did more than complain about
the system. He stepped up and tried to do something about it. He served
as a census-taker, was a member of the Board of Equalization, and worked
as Haralson County Registrar.
He was not always popular, but he did
always do what he felt was best for the county. In the mid-1990’s,
Eldred developed the symptoms of advanced Parkinson’s disease. Though
the disease made it difficult for Eldred to move quickly, he never
failed in his desire to work. He worked on computers as long as he was
able and continued trying to design and build things that he felt family
would enjoy and appreciate. His greatest joy was socializing with
friends and his church family at Midway Macedonia Baptist Church in
Villa Rica, Georgia, where he attended with his wife, Sarah; his
daughter, Melanie Capes; son-in-law, Randy Capes and granddaughter,
Maycie Capes.
On March 27, 2004, Eldred fell at home and broke his
hip. Following surgery and rehabilitation, he fell again and broke his
leg. He suffered a steady decline following this last surgery and was
very unhappy about his circumstances. On October 15, 2004, Eldred’s
family agreed that it was best for Eldred to be at home during his final
fays. Unfortunately, for his family, those days were fewer than
expected. When Eldred passed away shortly after three o’clock in the
afternoon on October 16, he knew he was home and in the care of people
who loved him. He went peacefully with his wife and daughter holding on
of his hands, and Jesus holding the other.
In addition to the family
members listed earlier, Eldred also leaves behind the following closest
family members; Daughter, Rhonda Schafer, and her husband Ron, and
grandchildren Nicholas, Scott, and Ethan (Florida); Son Ken Huff and his
wife Tanya, and grandchildren, Christina, Samantha, and Emerson (North
Carolina); Step-son Chris Rogers an his wife, Elaine (Douglasville);
Step-granddaughter, Lindsey Capes Varnado and her husband Scott
(Germany); Two brothers, E. V. Huff, Jr. and his wife Lil, as well as
Jack Huff and his wife Sandra, along with several nieces and nephews,
also survive Eldred.
The Funeral Services were held Tuesday, October
19, 2004 at Benson Funeral Home in Dallas, Georgia at 4:00 p.m. with
Rev. Todd Wright officiating.
Interment followed in Peaceful Meadows
Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers were Roy Abercrombie, Rex Pointer, Mark
Wilson, Don Wilson, Mark Dorough, and Ricky Foster.

Mrs. Ella Hunt
The Paulding New Era Dallas,
Georgia 16 Jan 1885 It becomes my painful duty to chronicle the death
of one who was dearly beloved by us all and by all who knew her, for she
was worthy. Mrs. Ella Hunt, wife of Mr. Henry Hunt, departed this life
Wednesday morning at 4 o’clock, January 7th, 1885. She was well until
about one hour before her death. The cause of her death was heart
disease. She was highly respected and early beloved by her church and
all who knew her, for her noble qualities and Christian virtues secured
her many friends who now mourn her absence. She joined the Missionary
Baptist church at Powder Springs about seven years ago.
She was
twenty-nine years of age when she died. She was married to Mr. Henry
Hunt about one year ago. Those who knew her never heard her speak ill of
any person. She seemed to love everybody, and was so good that the Lord
had need for her. She was naturally timid in disposition and was surely
loved by all people. A Friend, Hiram, Ga., Jan 12, ’85.
