George Jackson
The Daily
Constitution Atlanta, GA March 27, 1880 Jackson, Georgia
27 Mar
1880 (The Daily Constitution - Atlanta} Clotted with Human Blood; Fully
five thousand people at Dallas yesterday to witness the first hanging
that ever occurred in Paulding county, Georgia. The unfortunate person
upon whom the sentence of the law was executed was George Jackson, a
Negro of twenty-four years of age, and the offense for which he swung
was murder.
Jack Moss was his victim and three dollars was the
incentive. The place of execution is just one mile north of the Paulding
county court house. The scaffold had been erected in a bellow,
surrounded on three sides by steep, precipitous hills and by nature was
fitted for such an event, and abundant opportunity was give all to
witness the execution in its most minute details.
It was on Sunday,
December the 7th, 1870, that Jack Moss, a negro companion of Jackson's,
was last seen alive and then in company with Jackson himself. From
Sunday until Wednesday Moss was not seen' yet this created no remarks
until a party of young people found, on the day last mentioned, a hat by
the roadside covered with blood; near the hat was also found a large
sassafras stick. It was not difficult task to follow the track of blood
across the road to a marshy hollow some fifty yards distant, where the
body of Jack Moss, with a fractured skull and severed wind-pipe lay.
Thomas Ragsdale, coroner of the county, was notified and he at once
proceeded to the spot where he found the body. A jury of inquest, with
john George as foreman, was impaneled and an investigation began. The
had was recognized as the property of Jack Moss and the stick as that of
George Jackson's, therefore, it is not strange that suspicion at once
pointed to Jackson as the guilty party. He was sent for, but when told
what was wanted, refused to go: yet a little persuasion brought him face
to face with his victim. At first he denied any knowledge whatever of
the killing, but subsequently said he knew the man who did kill him, and
gave the name of a Negro residing nearby.
The evidence adduced
before the coroner, although wholly circumstantial, was conclusive as to
the guilt of Jackson, and further established the fact that the deed was
done for the purpose of procuring three dollars which Moss's father had
paid Jack that day in Jackson's presence. In accordance with the verdict
of the jury of inquiry Jackson was committed to jail to await the action
of the grand jury, which body on the 21 of February, 1880, found a true
bill against the accused. On the same day the trial began and continued
two days, Judge Underwood presiding and the solicitor-general and
Mesars. Harper and Adair appearing for the prosecution.
The defense
was represented by Mesars, Bartlett, Bell and Thompson. A plea of not
guilty was entered, and although the defense had not a single witness a
stubborn fight was made in behalf of the prisoner.
At the conclusion
of the second day's trial the case was submitted to the jury who after
an absence of an hour and a half rendered a verdict of guilty, and on
the 4th, sentence was passed upon Jackson by the presiding judge. Since
then Jackson has seen his end approach day by day, until yesterday at
11:55, when he was hung. By request of the doomed man, 12 o'clock was
the time appointed for his execution.
Yester, in company with
Sheriff Braswell, at 10am, a Constitution reporter visited the condemned
man in his cell in the Paulding county jail. When they entered the
corridor, Jackson was standing at the door of his cell holding to the
bars and quietly looking at the crowded streets, made so by his
execution. When told that a reporter had called to see him his face
beamed with smiles and he extended his hand. Jackson was evidently a
Negro of superior sense, quick, sharp and clever. In height he was five
feet nine inches and weighed one hundred and ninety-seven pounds and
although as black as jet was rather pleasing in his facial expression.
He talked freely and sensibly, acknowledging the crime as given in his
remarks upon the gallows. During the conversation his shroud was brought
in and preparation for his execution begun. When the shroud was put on
it was found to be too long and it was proposed to have it cut off, when
he said: 'No, pin it up. I can hold it up like the women folks.' The
shroud having been adjusted and hi hands manacled and arms pinioned, the
rope-a three quarter inch hemp-was adjusted, but during the whole time
he displayed remarkable nerve and calmness. At 10:30 Drs. Foster and
Robertson made an examination and pronounced him not the least bit
rattled, and in five minutes he was on his way to the wagon for his last
ride, from which, when he entered, he quietly surveyed the crowd,
smiling calmly at the curious upturned eyes. He then took a seat on his
coffin, and surrounded by a guard of forty men armed with
double-barreled shot-guns began his march to the scaffold.
At 10:45
he descended from the wagon, and with a firm treat coolly ascended the
twenty steps to reach the floor upon which he should make his last
stand. Upon the scaffold, besides the prisoner, were Sherriff Braswell,
Rev. Wm. Colster, Drs. Robertson and Foster, the sheriff from Polk
county and a Constitution reporter. Sheriff Braswell, stepping to the
front of the gallows said that he hoped good order would be maintained.
It may be well to said that fears of an outbreak among the negroes
was feared on account of a trade and rue which Jackson had made of his
body with a certain Paulding county physician. Then the rev. Mr. Colster
read a portion of the 37th chapter of the book of Numbers, and after its
completion Jackson stepped to the front of the gallows and said: 'Ladies
and Gentlemen: I know what you are here for. My time has come. I must
die and be hung. I killed Jack Moss and I killed him to save my life '
but now I lose both. We was playin cards and I win'ed his money, and he
said I must give it back or die. I said I wouldn't and he cut at me

Jarman, Mary
The Daily
Constitution Atlanta, GA November 15, 1896 Jarman, Mary
Child
Wife Innocent.
Paulding superior court has been engaged during the
past few days in the trial of the case of the state against Mrs. Sallie
Jarman, charged with murder.
The case is in some respects a most
remarkable one. the defendant is a slip of a girl, a childish figure in
short dresses, who only passed her fourteenth birthday last July. She
looks less like a murderess than any criminal I have ever seen. It is
almost impossible to believe that one with such an innocent looking face
could be guilty of such a heinous crime. Her manner is gentle, her
features delicate and rather pretty. She is the daughter of Mr. Nathan
Barron, a prominent and substantial citizen of this county.
On the
22nd of last March she was until in marriage to William Jarman, himself
only seventeen years of age. During the next few days the bridal couple
divided the time between the homes of Mr. Barron and Mr. George Jarman,
the father of the groom. On the 3rd of April while Mr. George Jarman and
his wife had gone to Dallas, Sallie Jarman prepared the noonday meal for
the family, which was very frugal, consisting of turnip salad, vinegar
pie and coffee.
The seven members of the family who drank the coffee
immediately became very ill, and commenced vomiting violently, from the
old 'Granny' Jarman down to little two-year-old Mary. They continued to
be very sick for several days, but all finally recovered except little
Mary, who died on the following Monday, after a great deal of suffering.
The only persons who ate the dinner who were not made sick were Sallie
Jarman and a baby grandchild of Mr. Jarman's, who had not taken any of
the coffee, according to the testimony of the state's witnesses.
Sallie Jarman was sent by the old 'granny' several hundred yards to a
neighbor's house for assistance and was gone for two hours, leaving the
family in that helpless condition. She claimed in her statement,
however, that she drank some of the coffee, and that she was sick on the
way to the neighbor's house, and this caused the delay.
Dr. M.U. Nix
was called to attend the sick members of the family, and stated the
symptoms indicated arsenical poisoning. Besides constant vomiting the
symptoms consisted principally of redness of the eyes, the swelling of
the face, feeble pulse and intense, burning thirst.
On account of
the actions of the defendant, suspicion fastened upon her, as she
prepared the coffee, and it was claimed by the state's witnesses that
she had procured a package of 'rough on rats' from her father's country
store and put it into the coffee, although the testimony in regard to
this was purely circumstantial.
There were various theories advanced
to account for the violent illness of the Jarman family, the defense
attempting to show that it might have been caused by the acid in the
vinegar pie, which was cooked in a tin pan. The experts, however,
testified that there would hardly be enough poison from this source to
go around among so many patients, and do so much damage; for it was also
testified that there were a great many chickens killed by it, and a hog
and dog made very sick from eating slops in which the coffee had been
thrown. Another theory of the defense was that the poison was kept there
by Luke Jarman, another son; to put into his 'blockade' whisky to make
it 'bead,' and that some had accidentally got into the coffee.
One
very investigative witness by the name of McMeekin, after feeling the
pulse of each patient, stated that he 'differed' from the doctor and
others as to the poison theory, and to demonstrate his conviction on the
subject proposed to eat a portion of each article of food that the
family had for dinner if Dr. Nix would treat him free of charge in case
his demonstration failed to demonstrate. He did actually eat some of the
salad and the vinegar pie, but allowed himself to be persuaded not to
tackle the coffee.
Twelve days after the death of the child her body
was disinterred and a postmortem examination made by Dr. W. C. Connally,
of this place. The stomach and liver were sent to Professor George F.
Payne, state chemist, who analyzed them. Both Dr. Connally and Professor
Payne testified in the case that they found no traces of arsenical
poisoning, but admitted that the poison could have been vomited so as to
leave no trace, and yet enough have been absorbed into the system to
produce death.
There seems to be an entire absence of motive if it
be true that the poison was put into the coffee by the defendant. There
was no evidence to show that she had any trouble with her young husband,
but there was some testimony that she was very reluctant to leave her
father's house the day before the alleged crime to return to the home of
her husband's father, though this was denied by the defense and evidence
offered to disprove it. The only plausible theory to account for her
act, if guilty, is that she was trying a childish experiment and did not
anticipate the disastrous consequences to her husband's family; or else,
she had found marriage a failure, and tired of her young husband, whose
habits were not the best and thought this the quickest method to get rid
of him and his family. There was some testimony offered by the state,
but ruled out by the court, in reference to her actions toward her
husband, which aroused some suspicion, although he was sick at the time
the dinner was eaten, and drank none of the fatal coffee.
During the
trial the defendant has been perfectly self-possessed and shown no
emotion whatever. She seems to have no conception of the gravity of her
situation; or else, conscious of innocence, she has no fear of the
verdict. Her statement on the stand was well delivered and indicated no
lack of intelligence. There are no marks of the criminal about her.
After studying her child-like and apparently guiltless face, outside of
the evidence, the conclusion is almost irresistible that she is innocent

Held for Mr. Joe Kato September 3
Mr. Joe Kato, 45, passed away
suddenly at his home in Austell on August 30, 2004 of heart failure.
Joe’s passion was his job, driving a truck for most of his life. He
never met a stranger, and was always willing to stop and help someone;
always going the extra mile for someone in need, often going without
himself. He was also an Eagle Scout and he received many awards for
saving the life of Ricky Harris in 1975.
For many years, he was a
single parent, loving and raising his son, Jeffrey, as best as he could.
Jeffrey was his life and he loved him like no other.
He was loved
deeply by his niece and nephew, Cameron and Anslee Cole, to whom he had
a very close relationship with. To them he was a perfect uncle, always
bringing them candy and would make them believe he was pulling it out of
their ears. Always joking and playing with them.
He left a big void
in our lives and hearts that can never be filled. Rest now brother, you
no longer have the struggles, pain, and heat breaks you had here with
us. To leave your love in the hearts you left behind is not to die. We
loved you so much and we will miss you always.
He is survived by his
mother, Helen Kato of Hiram; son Jeffrey Kato of Powder Springs; sister
of his heart and soul, Lisa Cole of Hiram; brother-in-law and best
friend, Allen Cole of Hiram; sister of whom he loved with all his being,
Julia Long of Lithia Springs, Cameron Cole of Hiram and Matt’s fiancé,

cousins, Sandra Nicholson and her husband Kenny, who was also a best
friend, and their family; Theresa and Steve Cochran of Smyrna and

Andrew E. McBrayer
Carroll
Free Press November 8, 1889
The Late Andrew E. McBrayer Mr. Andrew
Erwin McBrayer, one of the oldest citizens of this section, died at his
home near Draketown, Ga., October 29, 1889.
He settled on Sweetwater
Creek, near Villa Rica, more than sixty years ago. He raised a large
family, of whom six sons and two daughters are living in this community.
Through all his long life he was respected and honored by all who
knew him. A self-reliant man who set no traps to catch success but went
straight on in his plain duty; his whole life characterized by a
remarkable fidelity to principle.
When about to die he called his
children around him and advised them to live in this life for a better
life in eternity. Only a few minutes before he died he said: "Boys, I
can help you no more. Do right."
It was fitting that the last words
of "Andy" McBrayer should be "do right." The watch words of his life,
the "key note" of a character upon which no stain of dishonesty rests.
His life was a rebuke to the evil, an inspiration to the upright. Though
gone from earth we cannot say he is dead. Such men never die. He
assisted all his children in getting comfortable homes and left an
estate to be divided among them; but the inheritance left to them of
which they have reason to be proud, prouder than all else, is the
inheritance of a good name. "As honest as Andy McBrayer," was considered
in the community in which he lived as the highest attainment of
integrity and to be His friend was a recommendation to any man.
Though not a member of the church and never a professing
Christian---this, perhaps, the only serious mistake of his life; for his
life, useful as it was, might have been infinitely more so, had he
openly and before man acknowledged his God. Yet, it seems impossible
that he could have lived as he did had he not been influenced by the
grace of God, and those who knew him best, and loved him most, can but
believe that he whose rule of action through life was "DO RIGHT" not for
policy's sake but because it was right; is safe--resting in a country
inhabited by those who in this life "walked uprightly, worked
righteousness and spoke the truth in their hearts." He loved his own
southern land and native state with a devotion which only a true patriot
can love.
Living as he did near the lines of Carroll, Paulding and
Haralson counties each claimed him as her citizen and they all mourn
together over their loss.
His life and character are the heritage
alike of his children, his community, his county, his state, and his
country--and they are poorer when he is gone. Sleep on, thou pure
patriot, upright man.
When those who knew him, respected him and
honored him, pass the grave of his sleeping they will say: "Here lies a
man who never wronged his fellow man." W.B.C.

George W. McLarty
The
Paulding New Era Dallas, Georgia 16 Jan 1885 George W. McLarty was born
in Mecklenburg county, N.C., the 30th day of August 1804, and died in
Dallas, Paulding county, Ga., January 15th, 1885, at 4 o’clock a.m. aged
eighty years, four months and sixteen days. He came to Georgia in the
year 1832, and settled four miles West of what was then Skin Chestnut,
but now Douglasville. He lived at the place for forty-one years, moving
form there to Dallas, where he lived till his death.
On the 24th of
January, 1833, he married Miss Charity Bates, of Gwinnett county, with
whom he lived happily for fifty years, surviving her only about two
years. This union was blessed with eleven children—six sons and five
daughters—six of whom—five sons and one daughter, together with his
faithful companion—preceded him across the dark river.
When about
twenty one years of age he joined the Presbyterian church, and lived a
consistent Christian life to the day of his death, having been a church
member for sixty years. There being no Presbyterian church in the
vicinity of the place where he settled after coming to Georgia, and his
wife being a Methodist, he united himself with the M.E. church South,
and ever afterwards was a member of that church.
He had been a
member of the Masonic lodge for about forty years having joined the
lodge at old Villa Rica when that lodge was first organized. In all the
relations of life he was a noble man, and one whose example could be
followed with profit by the rising generation.
His last illness was
of five weeks and five days’ duration. To the last he retained the
possession of all his faculties and realized that the end was near and
calmly awaited the final summons, expressing by word and manner his
faith in receiving the reward vouchsafed to those who had faith over the
few things of earth. During his last hours he was surrounded by his
children, and he expressed his gratitude at being permitted to die in
the midst of his children. He will be buried at the old family burying
ground, at Old Villa Rica, today with Masonic honors.

Mr. and Mrs. Meek
Paulding
New Era August 16, 1889 Died. Their friendship grew into love, and
they were married on the 5th of Feb 1889. At marriage the husband was
not yet twenty and the wife less than eighteen years of age. For sixty
years and more the united comment of their lives, …smoothly onward.
Twelve children were born to them in all and eight of these are now
living. At their death the entire family included eight children, thirty
two grand-children and eleven great grandchildren all of the children
but one belonged to the Methodist church. Nearly all of the
grandchildren and great grand children are in the same denomination.
Both old people spoke of the fact with great pride. It was their delight
to be surrounded by their descendants and they spoke with great pleasure
of the face that they had seen all their grandchildren. They joined the
Presbyterian church in Henry county when they were quite young. They
moved to Cobb county in 1836(??) where they lived nineteen years. While
in Cobb county Mr. Meek was a member of the grand jury for sixteen years
in succession. In one year at both terms of that court. In the fall 1857
they moved to Paulding county, and in 1866 joined the Methodist church
at Bethel together. Their membership continued at Bethel or at Nebo
until their death. Mr. Meek too the family prayer at the fist of his
married life and kept it up until the last, whenever sickness did not
prevent. He was an untiring worker and a strong active man. He was a
great reader, a good neighbor, devoted to his family and an earnest
Christian. His wife was a great lover of the Bible, also knew many
passages by heart and could refer to any part of the book. Her knowledge
of the Bible was something very uncommon, although she suffered much she
was never known to complain, she was thoughtful of others to the very
last, she selected the text for her funeral ----, Isaiah XXXV, Chap ---.
The funeral of each was preached by Rev. Miles Newton, an old friend of
the family and they were buried at Nebo Church. The life and death of
the good old people is a precious memory to the family and a lesson to
this world, a --- of the ---of Christian ---.
