Mrs. Daisy Mae Webb Goss, age 72, a life long residence of Anniston, died at her residence, 12 East 19th, Street, this morning at 2:30 o'clock following a four-weeks' illness. Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Blue Mountain Baptist Church with the Rev. Buford Johnson, Jeffery Doss, Charlie Mange and J. M. Rhodes officiating; burial will be in Plum Springs Cemetery, Usrey in charge. The body will lie in state at 306 Dogwood Street, Blue Mountain. Active pallbearers will be Roy H. Owens, Vernon Hunt, Doyle Robinson, Ralph Brown, Willard Dawson and Vernon Saxon. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Irwin Boozer, Dr. Thomas Bridges, Dr. Ralph Holland, L. A. Bentley, J. L. Gann, J. A. Clements, H. W. Murray and Douglas Nunnally. Mrs. Goss is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Eli Owens of Blue Mountain, Mrs. John B. Turner of Anniston and Mrs. S. C. Dawson of Blue Mountain; four sons, Ira and Harvey of Anniston, Ellis Goss of Cedar Bluff and Norman Goss of Rockmart, GA.; two sisters, Mrs. Annie Adair of Anniston and Mrs. Ed. Chappell of Dallas, Tex.; two brothers, Tom and John Webb of Anniston; 27 grandchildren and 36 great grandchildren. (Anniston Star, Thursday, January 6, 1955)


Mr. Caley Raymond Hall, age 74, of 813 W. Ladiga St., died at his home Monday following a long illness. Funeral services will be held at the Church of God Wednesday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Dewey Smith and the Rev. J. C. Abernathy officiating. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery. Mickelson Brown-Service Mortuary in charge. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Mary Allen Hall, of Piedmont; three sons, Charlie Hall and Hubert Hall, both of Piedmont, and Howard Hall, of Weaver, one sister, Mrs. Lunie Wallace, of Piedmont; and two grandchildren. Active pallbearers will be Hubert Masters, J. C. Simpson, Charlie Coley, Henry White, Woodrow Carter, and Kenneth McCord. Mr. Hall was a lifelong resident of Piedmont and a member of the Church of God. The body will remain at the mortuary chapel until one hour, prior to the service. Harper Hamilton Hendricks, age 51, of the Freeman Ferry Road, well known employee of General Electric, died in a Rome hospital at 8:05 p.m. Friday. He had been in his usual health, having worked Friday, and his death comes as a shock to his family and friends. Mr. Hendricks was born in Rome, April 10, 1906, son of the late Thomas J. and Ora Beulah Kitchens Hendricks and had spent the greater part of his life in Rome. During the 1920,s he served eight years in the 10th Field Artillery. For the past one and one half years he had worked in the Tool and Dye Department at General Electric and was formerly associated with Celanese Corp. for 13 years and Rome Machine & Foundry Co. for 10 years. He was a member of Oostanaula Lodge 113 F. & A.M. and I.O.O.f. Anchor Lodge No 216. Survivors include the widow, the former Miss Ruth Ingram to whom he was married, October 27, 1939, one brother, John Thomas Hendricks, and one sister, Mrs. M.L. Turner, both of Rome. Also surviving is a niece, Mrs. Dan Strickland, East Point. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. today in the chapel of Jennings Funeral Home with the Rev. W. O. Denson, Rev. S. H. Pendley, pastor of Pleasant Valley South Baptist Church and Rev W. A. Farr, pastor of Turner Chapel Baptist Church officiating. Interment will follow in the family plot in East View Cemetery. Active pallbearers include John Sanford and Bill Ingram, Hobert Hincey, Dan Strickland and Alton Cochran. The following will serve as honorary pallbearers; L. W. Carmichael, Robert Green, Will Towers, J. T. Poindexter, Carl E. Chapman, L. A. Payne, Charles Bert Payne, J. W. Weaver, Layman Sherman, E. S. and Ben Hendricks, Guy Smith, Malcolm Smith, Grady Baugh, Carlton Angle, L. F. Dillard, R. C. Quarles, W. M. Hale, Julian Payne, Elbert Williams and R. L. Graham. William Harvey Myers, was born in Canton, May 14, 1909, son of the late William Fletcher Myers and Lola Roberts Myers. He had been a resident of Cordele for two years but had spent the greater part of his life in Rome and Floyd County. Surviving are the widow, the former Willie Mae Gilliam; four sons, Billy and Cary Myers of Cordele, Bobby and Buddy Myers of Rome, four daughters, Misses Barbara, Shirley, Edith and Bernice Myers, all of Cordele; one sister, Mrs. Ruth Rollins of Cave Spring, Rte. 2; one brother, Lee M. Myers of Silver Creek, Rte. 1 and two grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Jennings Funeral Home. Funeral services for William Harvey Myers, 49, who died Tuesday, were to be held today at 3:30 p.m., at the Jackson Chapel Methodist Church with interment to follow in the family lot in Jackson Chapel Cemetery near Cave Spring. Preston A. Herndon, Sr., 75, of 13 Merrell Ave., died in a Rome hospital this morning. He had been ill since October, but his death came following a stroke Wednesday night at which time he was hospitalized. He was born in Newnan, March 31, 1884, son of the late Sam Herndon and Ann Jones Herndon, and resided in Woodbury, Ga. For several years prior to moving to Rome in May 1959. He was a member of the Baptist church and a retired farmer. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. James Powers, Rome and Miss Peggy Herndon of LaGrange; four sons, P. A. Herndon, Jr., Woodbury; G. W. E. Herndon of Carrollton, Bobby J. Herndon of the U. S. Marines, stationed in Ontario, Canada and Jerry J. Herndon of Rome; two sisters, Mrs. Modena Hall of Newnan and Mrs. Olen Gallett of Fairburn; one brother, Geta Herndon of Austell; 10 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Sarah Peugh, age 89, of Cedartown Route 1, passed away Tuesday afternoon at her residence after an illness of four months. Mrs. Peugh was born in Polk County September 24, 1862 and had lived in this county most of her life. She had been a member of the Friendship Baptist Church for the past 50 years. Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Lula Smith, Gainesville, Ga. Mrs. Mollie Cash, Mrs. Ads Sanders and Mrs. Fannie Roberson, all of Cedartown, five sons, Jep Peugh, Rio Vista, Texas; Oscar and Buddy Peugh of Rockmart, Route 1; Luther Peugh, Cedartown and Isaac Peugh, Felton; 37 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren and a large number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at Antioch Baptist Church today at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. Robert Knight and the Rev. Jim Wright officiating. Interment was in Antioch Cemetery. Pallbearers were Fred Peugh, Herschel Peugh, Gene Peugh, Ivie Cash, Howard Robinson and Junior Sanders. Olin Gammage Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. Short Infant, The infant of Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Short; of Cedartown, Route 2, passed away Sunday morning (August 3, 1952) in a local hospital. Survivors are two sisters, Linda Ann and Annie Ruth Short, of Cedartown, Route 2; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. George W. Smith of Cedartown; and paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Short, of Cedartown. Graveside services were held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Friendship Baptist Church with the Rev. Ed Brewster officiating. Interment was in the family lot with Olin Gammage Funeral Home in charge. (Cedartown Standard, Wednesday, August 6, 1952)


Mr. Albert Slaughter, age 61, was killed instantly in a train wreck Tuesday at noon (March 9, 1954) at Esom Hill, GA. Funeral services will be held at Salem Baptist Church at 3:00 p.m. (GA. time) Thursday, with the Rev. Hugh Barrett officiating. Interment will be in the adjoining cemetery, with the Lester C. Litesey Funeral Home in charge. Mr. Slaughter was born October 30, 1892 in Cherokee County, AL., and had passed his entire life in and around Polk County. He was a member of Salem Baptist Church and Mt. Signal Lodge No. 508 F. & A.M. Pallbearers will be Hubert Williams, J.T. Williams, Max Hardin, Doyle Morris, Sammy Irwin, and Worth Williams. Surviving are his wife, three sons, Amos Slaughter, of Esom Hill, Clarence Slaughter, of Jacksonville, Ala., and Ralph Slaughter of Cedartown; one step son Fred Reed, of Jacksonville, Ala.; two daughters, Mrs. Archie Ouzis of Tampa, Fla., and Mrs. Clyde Hendrick, of Acree, GA.; three brothers, Willie Slaughter, of Cedartown, Johnny Slaughter, of Lougdon, Ala., and Luther Slaughter of Rockmart; three sisters, Mrs. Julie Gossett, of Piedmont, Ala., Mrs Charles Leak, of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Mrs. Lucy Knight, of Chattanooga. Eleven grandchildren also survive.


Mrs. Bessie Mae Smith Wilson, age 57, of Cedartown, died, May 27, 1954, in a local hospital. Mrs. Wilson was born February 18, 1897 in Stilesboro, Georgia. She was the former Miss Bessie Mae Ferguson. Survivors include her husband. Julius Wilson, three daughters, Mrs. Fred Forehand, of Bonisay, Florida, Mrs. Charles Tanner of Cedartown, and Mrs. Herbert Lewis of Cedartown, two sons, Charles William Smith, of Cedartown and Buddy Eugene Smith, of Marietta, two sisters, Mrs. Pearl Tanner and Mrs. Belle Smith, both of Cedartown, three brothers, John Ferguson, George Ferguson, both of Cedartown, and Harold Ferguson, of Knoxville, Tennessee and twelve grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by the Lester C. Litesey Funeral Home.


Hoyt Leon Smith, of Tecumseh, Alabama passed away Saturday afternoon, May 25, 1957, in a local hospital following an accident suffered in swimming about 10 days ago. Mr. Smith, born October 6, 1934 in Cherokee County, Alabama, had lived most of his life in the Tecumseh community. Before his accident he was employed by Arrington Mining Company. Surviving are: his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hoyt Smith; one sister, Miss Ellie Smith; two brothers, Jimmy and J. W. Smith; maternal grandfather, Charles P. Arrington, Paslestine, Alabama; paternal grandmother, Mrs. Willie Smith, Tecumseh. Several aunts and uncles also survive. Funeral services were held at three p.m. (Georgia time) today at Salem Baptist Church, Bluffton, Alabama with Rev. Clinton Garmon officiating. Interment followed in the Salem cemetery. Pallbearers were: Charles Howard, Howard Gibson, Hershel Langston, Richard Roberts, Bobby Griffin and William Beck. The Olin Gammage Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Rev. Leamon Andrew Smith, 58, of 604 East Ave., died Thursday, March 31, 1955, in Emory University Hospital in Atlanta after a short illness. Mr. Smith was born May 15, 1896 in Polk County. He was a member of the Second Baptist Church, a Mason, and had been sales-manager of Pickett Chevrolet Company since 1927. Rev. Smith was ordained to preach in1920. He had lived in Polk County his entire life. Funeral services will be held in the Second Baptist Church at 2 p.m. Saturday, the Rev. Heyward Baxter, the Rev. Buddy York and the Rev. Grover Cook officiating. Burial will follow in the New Harmony Cemetery, with the Cave Spring Masonic Lodge in charge. Survivors include his wife, the former Miss Odarine Stephenson; one son, Dr. Fred C. Smith of Atlanta; his mother, Mrs. L. V. Smith of Cedartown; one brother Webb Smith of Cedartown; four sisters, Mrs. Ralph Stephens, Mrs. Bob Whitehead, Mrs. Dolly Wood of Cedartown, and Mrs. Jesse Couzzourt of Milledgeville, and Mrs. Alec Stephenson of Cedartown and two grandchildren. Active pallbearers will be John Pickett, John Burton, S.M. Carden, Euzelle Lee, David Morgan, and Willard Ledbetter. Honorary pallbearers will be the Rev. J. H. Mull, the Rev. Clifford Chandler, the Rev. J. W. Clinton, The Rev. Ivey Cash, the Rev. Robert Lloyd, and the Rev. Grady Kines. The Lester C. Litesey Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


Daniel Stephens, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. James Ralph Stephens of 120 Adams Avenue, passed away suddenly early this morning in a local hospital. Graveside services will be held at 4:00 p.m. today at New Harmony Cemetery with Rev. Hayward Baxter, pastor of the Second Baptist Church officiating. He is survived by his father and mother, four brothers, Ralph, Jr., Darrell and Earnest, of Cedartown, and L.A. Stephens, of Fort Benning, GA., two sisters Nancy Stephens, of Cedartown and Mrs Vernon Stephens of Rome, maternal grandmother, Mrs. George Smith, and paternal grandmother, Mrs. Mary Stephens. The Lester C. Litesey Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Note: (Daniel Stephens passed away on the same day he was born Aug. 31, 1954)


Mrs. Martha Purcell Stephenson, age 82, passed away suddenly, Monday December 28, 1953, at her daughter,s home in Piedmont Ala. Mrs Stephenson, formerly resided in Cedartown. She was preceded in death by her husband, fifty years ago. Survivors include two sons, Alex and Joe, both of Cedartown; three daughters, Mrs. Pauline Spivey, Of Piedmont, Mrs. Oderine Smith, and Mrs. Magnese Weddington. Thirty grandchildren and several great grandchildren also survive. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon, December 30, at the Second Baptist Church in Cedartown, with the Rev. Heyward Baxter, and Rev. Mack Jones officiating. Interment was in Salem Alabama cemetery with the Owens Funeral Home, from Piedmont, in charge of the arrangements.
