Tommie Curtis Barnes was the daughter and first born of Thomas Pryor
Barnes and "Kittie" Elizabeth Virginia Strange. She was born 6 July 1863,
during the war. Her father, who was color bearer for Co. G, 5th Ga. Inf.,
was expecting a son and asked that the child be named for his fallen
commander and friend Col. Thomas Black. There is a very ornate monument
to the memory of Col. Black in the Ellaville cemetery erected after the
war by his commrades. Col. Black's wife's maiden name was Curtis, thus
the child was named Tommie Curtis Barnes in honor of Col. and Mrs. Black.
