Mr. J. D. Smith Dies in Atlanta

Mr. Joseph Daniel Smith, 90, died in an Atlanta hospital Wednesday morning at 4 o'clock after being quite ill for several days.

Mr. Smith, or Prof. Smith as he was called by so many people in Barnesville and this section, was president of Gordon Military College from 1907 to 1910. He came to Barnesville from Griffin. He has taught math at Gordon since he was president. He has many students and friends over the states who loved him.

Mr. Smith was a member of the First Methodist Church of Barnesville at the time of his death, having been an active member for a long number of years. He was the teacher of the Wesley Bible Class of the Methodist Church until his health made it impossible for him to stay alone, and he had to go to Atlanta to be near his daughter, Mrs. Nell S. McMillan.

After he quit the teaching profession, he held a position with the New York Life Insurance Company and later was connected with the F. H. A.

Mr. Smith was a christian gentleman and he dearly loved Barnesville and the people of Barnesville. Mrs. Smith died before he went to Atlanta to live.

He is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Nell S. McMillan of Atlanta; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Bobbie Smith of Barnesville, and a granddaughter, Miss Nancy Smith of Barnesville.

Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the First Methodist Church of Barnesville with the Rev. William Ruff, pastor of the Thomaston First church, and the Rev. Samuel Carter, pastor of the Barnesville Methodist Circuit officiating.  Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

Hubbard Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
