Revolutionary War Pensioners:

William Sweatman, a resident of Thomas County

William Sweatman, a resident of Thomas County aged 66 years, makes the following declaration. 3 May 1820. William Sweatman enlisted

for the term of 12 months in the state of North Carolina, in the company commanded by Capt Joseph Thomas Rhodes in the regiment

commanded by Col Armstrong.  He was discharged from the service in or near Bacons Bridge in the state of NC and that he

relinquishes every claim to a pension except the present. That his name is not on the roll of any state except North Carolina. Old Age

and infirmities have compelled him to the generosity of his country. That he is within the provisions of an act of Congress

to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval service of the US in the Revolutionary War passed 18 March 1818.

Schedule of property: 275 acres of pine land in NC; 3 head horses, small stock cattle; stock of hogs. Sale of property in Duplin County

NC in 1820. Received no money from the sale, it going to satisfy executions for security and other contracts.  Family is eight in number: Sarah

aged 28, Eliza Ann aged 22; Allice aged 20; John H (age blacked out); Zacheus aged 16 unable to labour because he had been afflicted

with palsy; George M Sweatman a grandson age 15 and wife Lavina aged 60. Eldest son hired out to try to pay William Sweatman's debts

for provision and rent.   From Will Book A, page 37-41.
