1. residence, census, 1860 - El Dorado, Union County, Arkansas

Archibald is shown living alone at his sister and brother-in-law's farm in this census. Bethany, his first wife died sometime around 1854. He actually has a higher personal net worth than they do ($3500 personal property as opposed to their $3000 personal/$1600 real estate). He is 42 at this point. None of his children are shown. Since they were very young at this point, perhaps they are living with his dead wife's family.

General Notes (Husband)

================================================================================

Archibald came to Troup County by way of Monroe County, Georgia in 1827. We know this from a land purchase he made at that time from Whitfield Sledge, another early Troup pioneer. He paid $250 for 202.5 acres in land lot 257, district 5. This is recorded in Deed Book A. Most likely, Mr. Sledge won this property in the Georgia Land Lottery, since all those parcels were 202.5 acres in size.

However, his time in the county was short - he died intestate before 1829. His possessions were handled by different administrators, including W. W. Carlisle and David B. Cameron. Three appraisers were hired to inventory his possessions.

Records of the sale of his worldly goods to thirty different purchasers exist in the Troup County archives. His slaves, Mack, Sarah, Dick, Sealy (sp?), Harriet and Arthur were all purchased by the administrator of the estate, D. B. Cameron, on November 25th, 1829. Tempy was retained and we might guess that she was the children's nursemaid. He left a wife and five small children behind. He also had five older children.

Archibald had a son John who also had children and about midway through the distribution of the returns of his estate, John must have died because his orphans are included in the distributions of 1844 and 1845, when the estate was closed.

Because his other older son Neal K. won land in the land lottery, you might wonder if John was the oldest. Typically the oldest son got the property when the father died.

We can guess from later census information that his wife Margaret must have been in her mid to late forties when her husband died.

At the time of their father's death the children were the following approximate ages: Neal K was about 24. John may be the oldest, but we cannot find a record of him. Alexander J and Archibald Alonzo were in their mid teens. Joseph was just a little tyke of one and a half years. Flora, Margaret and Jane were all in their late teens. Rebecca and Mary Ann both under five.

All of these children, with the possible exception of Joseph, claim on the US census to have been born in North Carolina. According to family verbal history, Neal K. was born in Robeson County.

An 1820 census of Robeson County shows an Archibald Wilkerson and the family listed on it matches the ages of the existing children at that time, which total seven. However, Mary Ann shows on the census later in life that she was born in North Carolina also, so we can safely assume that all of the children with the possible exception of Joseph, were born in North Carolina.

Mary Ann was born in September of 1824, so the family must have made their move south after that.

We also know that as of December of 1827, Archibald and his family were living in Monroe County, Georgia, which is just east of Troup County.

The children married several people from Greene County, Georgia which could mean that the family spent some time there on their migratory path. A map of Georgia shows that Greene and Monroe counties are on a direct path from Robeson County to Troup County.
