John Jackson Story

written and contributed by John F. Duckworth, DVM

John, the eldest son of Edward Jackson, was born ca. 1772 and married ca. 1796. The 1793 Burke County, N.C. Tax Roll of Capt. Adams shows John Jackson one poll and no land. At the January 1798 Burke County, N.C. Court a Deed by John Gilliland to John Jackson dated 1 March 1797 for 115 acres was recorded. The 1797 and 1805 Burke County, N.C. Tax Rolls for, Capt. Hemphill and Capt. Brevard respectively, show John Jackson, one poll and 115 acres land. October Burke County Court 1809, deed from John Jackson to James Hase, 115 acres proved by Harris Gilliam.

On 13 May 1807 STEPHEN MORGAN sold JOHN JACKSON of Burke County, N.C. for $300 150 acres In Rutherford Co., N.C., west of Stone Mountain, on both sides of the Main Broad River including the mouth of Rock Creek. Wts: JOSEPH JACKSON and SAMUEL McCROYER. Recorded 17 March 1811, Book 24-26, p. 411.

On 19 April 1808 JOHN JACKSON of Rutherford County, N.C. sold this land to HARRIS GILLIAM. Wits: JOSHUA SOUTHER and CHARLES GILLIAM. Recorded 9 January 1835, Book 41-42, p. 23. Why did they wait 27 years to record this deed? (See NC Grant #35).

1863 Feb. 22, 1819 John Jackson enters 100 ac on main Broad River., above the mouth of Rock Creek and near foot of Stone Mountain. Issued.

2095 Jan 7, 1820 John Jackson enters 50 ac on main Broad River., including the mouth of Rock Creek; includes his improvements where he lives. Issued.

2980 March 6, 1827 John Jackson enters 100 ac on Seader Cr. border: John Cook's old line. Issued.

3075 Oct. 17, 1827 John Jackson enters 100 ac on headwaters of Seader Cr., between Stone Mountain and Round Mountain. Issued.

Record of any future land dealing in Rutherford County NC have not been found.

A Warrant No. 640 entered the 11th day of March 1830. Surveyed for Powell Owenby fifty acres of land in Rutherford County situated on Rock Creek. Including his improvements. Beginning at a poplar, Harris Gilliam's Corner, thence No 6 E 84 poles Stake thence No 84 W 96 poles to a stake on the side of a mountain, thence No 6 W 84 poles to a stake on Gilliam's line thence to the beginning. The 17th of October 1830. F.A. Alexander & John Jackson, chainbearers.

No other land transactions by or to this John Jackson in Rutherford County have been recorded. However, he was still in the area as shown by the U.S. Censuses of 1810, 1820, and 1830. (Do not confuse this John Jackson with the John Jackson on the Burke-McDowell County Line; this area was later Yancey and now Mitchell County).

The 1800 Census, Burke Co., NC - John Jackson 1 m under 10, 1 m 26-45, 2 m 45+, 1 f under 10, 1 f 16-26. Who were the two males over 45 yrs? One may have been the Harris Gilliam who proved his deed in 1809. The female under 10 yrs. may havw been Susannah. The male under 10 was William Marion Jackson, 1799-1859.

The 1810 Census, Rutherford Co., NC - John Jackson 2 m under 10, 2 m 10-16, 1 m 26-45, 1 f 10-16 (this was Susannah), 2 f 16-26 (who were they? not on 1800 in Burke County.), 1 f 45
+ (this is an older woman than that in 1800 Census.) Did the first wife die and he married another woman with two daughters? This was his second wife, a widow with two daughters and she
was older than John.

The 1820 Census shows 1 male 45+, 2 females under 10 yrs. and 1 female 16-26 yrs, 1 female 45+.  The female 16-26 was Susannah who married Powell Owenby in 1821. The 2 females 16-26 in 1810 Census are gone as are all four sons (William had married Nancy Stanley 23 December 1814). The 2 females under 10 are no doubt John's daughters by the second wife and their names were possibly Sarah and Mary. Sarah and Mary remain in Rutherford County 1840 Census. Mary is in Union County by 1850. The 1830 Census, Rutherford Co., NC  - 1 m 40-50, 1 m 70-80, 1 f 60-70. I am sure this is the same John Jackson as he was still residing in Upper Broad River Districts, Rutherford Co., NC. Who were the elder couple? Where were the two daughters, Mary and Sarah?

The 1840 Census Rutherford Count (Upper Broad River neighbors to Harris Gilliam & Wmn. Owenby) Polly & Sarah Jackson, 20-30 yrs. of age, they were probably John's daughters. Polly and Sarah were the only Jacksons listed in Upper Broad River area in the 1840 Census of Rutherford County. Sarah had 2 m under 5 and 2 m under 5-10.  Polly had 1 f under 5 and 1 f 5-10.

In the 1840 Census, Union County GA, household of William Jackson, one male over 50 but not 70  years old is listed. This must have neen his father, John Jackson.

1850 Union Co., GA Census Choestoe District Family #672 Mary Jackson 31 F NC,  Sarah Ann 16, Martha 12, Susan 8, John 1. Family #674 Susannah Owenby 50 F NC, Barbara 27, John 25, Arther 23, William 20, Matilda 16, Ann 13, all NC.

On 28 October 1867 John "Little General" Jackson died in Union County GA. If this was John, son of Edward, he was about 95 years old. If this was John, son of Mary, he was about 16 years old.

JOHN AND JOSEPH JACKSON, BROTHERS, EARLY SETTLERS IN UNION COUNTY GA

JOHN JACKSON

The brothers, John and Joseph, sons of Edwared Jackson of  Randolph and Burke Counties NC., lived and died in Union County GA and both were members of the Choestoe Baptist Church.

< style="font-weight: bold;">John, the oldest son of Edward Jackson, was born ca 1772 in Guilford Counrt NC. He married ca. 1796. The 1793 Burke County, N.C. Tax Roll of Capt. Adams shows John Jackson one poll and no land. At the January 1798 Burke County, N.C. Court a Deed by John Gilliland to John Jackson dated 1 March 1797 for

From 1807 to 1827 John Jackson has owned several tracks of land in Rutherford County NC.

He was still in the area as shown by the U.S. Censuses of 1810, 1820, and 1830. (Do not confuse this John Jackson with the John Jackson on the on the Burke-McDowell County Line;this area was later Yancey and now Mitchell County).

The 1820 Census shows 1 male 45+, 2 females under 10 yrs. and 1 female

16-26 yrs, 1 female 45+.

The female 16-26 was Susannah who married Powell Owenby in 1821.

The 2 females 16-26 in 1810 Census are gone as are all four

sons (William had married Nancy Stanley 23 December 1814).

The 2 females under 10 are no doubt John's daughters by the second wife

and their names were possibly Sarah and Mary. Sarah and Mary remain in

Rutherford County 1840 Census. Mary is in Union County by 1850.

We can safely say the following were the children of John Jackson who had two or three wives. William Marion, Hardy, Levi, Brinkley, Susannah, Sarah, and Mary.

My grandfather, Thomas Kimsey Jackson, wrote in an Old Store Ledger in 1832 that his grandfather, William Jackson, was one of four brothers who came from North Carolina and settled at Mount Yonah (now Cleveland, White Co. GA.) The 1810 U.S. Census for Rutherford Co., NC shows John Jackson (Broad River) had 2 sons 10-16 yrs of age & 2 sons under 10 yrs. of age. By 1820 the sons were gone.

a. William Marion Jackson was born 1788-9, died 1859, married Nancy Owenby Stanley December 23, 1813 in Rutherford County NC. Removed to Habersham County GA by 1828 and on tp Union County GA by 1833William and Nancy Jackson settled on Town Creek, north side, "lower",   Choestoe, Union County, Georgia, lot #158. This was later known as "The Ben Collins Place". Their log house was not removed until the mid 1980's. In 1850 they were neighbors to David Duckworth, Leason Spivey, William Sullivan, Miles Goforth, John Noblet, and Aaron Wimpey. Their Children were:

William Maron and Nancy Owenbt Stanley Jackson are buried at Six Oaks Cemetery.

b. Hardy Jackson born 1803, died  ?   , married Violet Arthur and lived in that part of Habersham County, GA that became White County, GA. He was a farmer and had the following children: General M. born 1830, joined the Confederate Army and died 1862 in Richmond VA; Alfred T, was born 1842 and died in Richmond VA 1863; Mahaly born 1827 in South Carolina; M.F. born 1833; Nancy Elizaberh born 1834 died 1903, married Leander F. The Crumley letters are interesting to read. One letter writen by Nancy Elizaberh Jackson Crumley names Uncles Levi and Brinkley Jackson.

c. Levi Jackson was born ia 1808 in South Carolina and died in 1874 in McMinn County TN. He was married two times: Jemima Unknown and Safrona Jay. He was the first Sheriff of White County GA and at one time operated a Store in White County GA. Levi and Safona Jay Jackson had the following children: Julia Alma born 1867 died 2932, married Calvin Thomas in Loudan County TN; Mary L. born 1868;Victoria born 1870 married George Robinson in loudon County TN; Hattie; Robert born 1869 or 1872; and James  born 1872 died 1920.

d. Brinkley Jackson son of John Jackson, was born about 1813.  He married twins.  His first wife is unknown;  she died before 1860.  His second wife was Sarah Walters, whom he married on October 12, 1862 in White County, Georgia.  Brinkley Jackson drew lot 133 in the 5th district, 3rd section, in the Gold Land Lottery.  He later sold land in Habersham County to Irby Jackson, and the deed was witnessed by Levi Jackson.

In the 1840 Census, Union County GA, household of William Jackdon, one male over 50 but not 70 years old is listed. This must have been his father, John Jackson.

JOSEPH JACKSON

Joseph, the second son of Edward Jackson, was born ca. 1774, married in Burke County, North Carolina ca. 1798, and died in Union County, Georgi 1843. On the 1797 Tax List of Burke County, North Carolina he was listed with one poll, no land, in Capt. Hemphill's Company.

Burke County, N.C. Bastard Records, 26 September 1798 Elizabeth Hollingsworth, single, and Joseph Jackson; and in Burke County, N.C. Court January 1799 Term. Samuel Hollingsworth gave 250 #'s bond for the maintenance of a "base born" child begat on the body of Betsy Hollingsworth by Joseph Jackson.

On 17 April 1806 John Miller sold Joseph Jackson for $125, 100 acres of land on both sides of the main Broad River near the mouth of Laurel Creek in Rutherford County, N.C. Wts: S. Morgan, W. Graham, Willie Harris. Recorded 2 March 1811 (Book 24-26, p. 396). N.C. Grant 1221, Rutherford Co., NC, June 9th, 1815; entered April 14, 1814, 50 acres of land for Joseph Jackson, on the Main Broad River, bound by Joseph Jackson on the East. The chainbearers were JOSEPH JACKSON and JEHIEL JACKSON. In 1824 Joseph Jackson sold Hiram Jackson the above 150 acres on the Main Broad River in Rutherford County, N.C. (Book 38, P. 305.)

The female 16-26 yrs. on the 1810 Rutherford Co., NC U.S. Census Report was not a daughter of Joseph; she was not listed on the 1800 Burke Co., NC U.S. Census Report. She was most likely his sister, Polly Jackson, who married Moses Knoblet 22 August 1811 in Rutherford Co., NC.

At the time of the Gold Land Lottery in 1832 Joseph, Jehiel, and Sampson Jackson were living in Chastain's Company, William Jackson and Leason Spivey were living in Brock's Company, Habersham County, Georgia. Each had two draws, (married man, with wife and/or minor son under 18 and/or unmarried daughter, 3 year residence in Georgia, citizen of the United States). Jehile (Jehit) Jackson drew lot #176, 26th District of 3rd Section. No further information on Jehile Jackson.

Joseph Jackson was in Union County, Georgia when he sold Joseph Smith land and on 17 February 1836. Joseph Jackson of Union County, Georgia, sells to Kitchen Corn, for $300 250 acres (lot #19) in the second district of Habersham County, Georgia (Book N, p. 598).

The earliest membership list of The Baptist Church of Christ at Choestoe is of 1838 and among the members listed are, John Jackson, Joseph Jackson, William Jackson, Susannah Chaffin, and Leason Spivey.

Joseph Jackson apparently lived in the Coosa District, on Anderson Creek, and was a leader in establishing The Arm of Choestoe Church at Anderson Creek 10 June 1843.
