Alfonso J. Brown was the son of Joseph T. Brown (also buried in the City Cemetery) and Rosa E Sorrells.

A. J. Brown was married to Lena Gresham (daughter of James Monroe Gresham). She is buried in West View Cemetery, Fulton County in Atlanta, Georgia. After he died she moved with their two daughters to Atlanta and lived on Adair Street until her death in 1952.
