Since the publication of this article, Mr. Elliott has been contacted by descendants
of John J. Cox living here in Walton County.
Mr. Elliot is the 42nd Georgia Regimental Historian and would like to hear from descendants
of any of the men who served with any of the units under the 42d Georgia Regiment.

Thanks to the efforts of Mr. Robert Elliot, an Iron Cross Memorial Ceremony took place
at the Cox Cemetery in Walton County. About 40 descendants of John Cox were present. Members of the Confederate Honor
Guard and Ann Hall, representing the James M. Gresham Chapter #1312 of the United Daughters of the Confederacy
were in attendance.

Service to the Confederacy
John Cox enlisted Oct 31, 1861 as a Junior 2nd Lieutenant. Commission in Company B, 3rd State Troops Regiment.
Mustered out company B, 3rd State Troops Regiment on May 1, 1862. Enlisted in Company H, 42nd Infantry Regiment Georgia on May 15, 1862. promoted to full 1st Lieutenant on Aug 28, 1862. Retired, wounds, Co H, 42nd Infantry Regiment on April 15, 1864.

John James Cox was born April 3, 1840 in Walton County, Georgia. He was the son of William Perrington Cox, born 1805, Clarke County, Georgia and Julia Ann Malcom, born 1821 in Morgan County, Georgia. (See photo) William died April 14, 1887 and Julia died December 1843, both in Walton County. They are both buried at the Cox Cemetery for which William donated the land. John Cox had two brothers and one sister, Alexander M, Charles A., and Mary Ann, all born in Walton County.
John Cox married Susan C. Hester, Feb 2, 1865 in Walton County. Susan was born March 3, 1840. They had eight children (Lila, Johnny, Seaborn, Lettie, Julia, Katie and Nannie)
Marriages for these children that I have found thus far:
Sarah (Katie) married James H. Peters, Dec 17, 1893 in Walton County. They had eight children. Sarah died Dec 22, 1940 in Walton County and James died in 1949. Dola Cox married Thomas H. Hawk in 1888 in Walton County, They had six children. Dola died in 1924 in Walton County and Thomas in 1944.

1850 Census Walton County, Division 88, John Cox, age 10 in household of his parents, William and Mary Cox. There are six other children in the household, Alexander 12, Mary A. 9, Charles 7, Rebecca 5, Julia A. 3, Sarah under age 1
1870 Morgan County, City of Madison. John and Susan age 30, children, Tolula 10, Seaborn 5, Mary J., 3, and Dola A. age 1.
1880 Census, Walton County, Georgia, Blasingame's District. John and Susie and their eight children are listed by initials and age only. There is also a T. F. Peters, age 20 living in the household.
1900 Census, Walton County, Georgia, Blasingame's District, John and Susan age 60, Lula F. Peters, age 40, Clarence C. Cox age 19, Walter T. age 17 and Lilla M. age 14
1910 Census Walton County, Georgia, Blasingame's District. John Cox is shown as widowed living in the household as father of Walter, age 27, wife Maggie age 27, Susie age 7, Mildred age 3, Lella Cox age 50 and Miles Tomen age 18
John Cox died April 30 1923. His wife Susan died December 16, 1905. They are both buried at the Cox Cemetery.
