Dear Sir:
I received your friendly letter in
due time whitch gave me great pleasure to learn that you were
fine and had the good fortune to reach your first destination
safe and find all our friends are well and cheerful.
You say that they ware very glad to see you. I expect that
I should be as glad to see you as they ware. I am glad to
here that our company is so much respected by the people below.
Truely it is a considerable recommendation to our neighbors and
country to rase such a quantity of perfect gentlemen. I am
truely glad that you understand the art of cooking as well.
I have no doubt but you will find it a great convenience and if
you allways get a plenty to cook there will be no danger of your
starving. You have assured me that if your bravery is
tested you never will betray that confidence in whitch your
friends have in you. Well, may I not believe you will and
ware I to believe you should prove a trator or act cowardly in
any way whatever I would rather not here of it. You said
that I should write you a long letter but I don't think I could
interest you as much as I have but little interesting news.
There has been no wedding since you left. Mr. J. Nash and
Miss Sulavan they ware married a few days before you left.
Dr. Bonner came down a few days ago and hired Mr. Hartsfield for
the next year. He is very much interrupted about Mr.
Hanes, he says that he never in tends to pay him a sent.
The subject Sir you so directly
allude to is one that I have not spent but verry few thoughts
about. Since you mentioned it as I am quite young yet and
as I have no intention of marrying for some time to come yet I
do not feel willing to go into any special obligation but I do
assure you that I fully appreciate the value of this affection
whitch you have manifest for me and the time ever will come I
assure you when they shall sease to be remembered and properly
appreciated by me and I hope that my conduct will ever be such
as will meet your regard. I will be pleased Sir to hear
from you at any time it may be convenient. With the
highest esteem and respect dear Maj I am very truely your
friend.
Martha Clanton
You said that you wanted me to
excuse your hand writing and grammatical phrases as reguards the
writing. You are quite excuseable and I was not able to
detect any. If you should find any errors in mine I too
hope that you will excuse them.
