tab to the right. Brief history of the county: Bibb County was established on Dec 9, 1822 from Jones, Monroe, Twiggs and Houston Counties. The County was named after William Wyatt Bibb, a Georgia politician who served in the House of Representatives and the senate before moving to Alabama Territory and becoming Alabama's first elected Governor. William W Bibb ca 1819 Bibb County was formed one year after the Creek Indians ceded the last of their land in the area. It was a time of land lotteries in the state. Fort Hawkins (in Bibb County) was established initially in 1806-1809 overlooking the Ocmulgee River, which was originally the border of the Muskogee Creek Nation. The location was chosen by Benjamin Hawkins, who was the US Agent for Indian Affairs south of the Ohio River from 1796-1816. Fort Hawkins originally served as a military supply for State militia and Federal troops. It was built at the direction of Thomas Jefferson after he forced the Creek to cede their lands. Fort Hawkins guarded the Lower Creek Pathway, an extensive American Indian network that the US Government later improved as the Federal Road, which linked Washington DC with Mobile, Alabama and New Orleans, Louisiana. It served as major military distribution during the War of 1812 and the Creek War of 1813. After those two wars it garrisoned troops and was a trading post. It was decommissioned about 1828, and later burned to the ground. |
