Riley Homer Poole Family

Source: Sue Webb

Riley Homer POOLE was born October 19, 1865 in Randolph County Georgia. His father was William J. 'Bill' Poole and his mother was Charlotte L 'Mary' MITCHNER. On April 23, 1882 in Randolph county he married Elizabeth Virginia TEMPLE, born September 10, 1865 at Randolph county Georgia. Elizabeth was the daughter of Jonas Elijah Temple and his wife Caroline SHEFFIELD. Riley and Elizabeth Poole had 9 children and raised them on tenant farms in Randolph and Early counties Georgia.
Their children were: About 1890 Riley and Elizabeth and most of the children moved to Early county Georgia and settled in the Jakin area. The children all married and began families of their own, some stayed in Jakin and some moved across the river to live in Henry county Alabama. Riley and Elizabeth spent the next 35 years moving between Georgia and Alabama; living near one of their children at all times. Two of their daughters married two of John Bariom Webb's sons and when the Webb family moved to Central Florida most of the Poole's followed. In 1931 Riley and Elizabeth and two sons went back to Early county Georgia after the land boom ended in Central Florida.

Riley Poole died April 20, 1936 at home in Jakin from kidney failure. He is buried at Springfield Baptist Church cemetery in Jakin, Early county Georgia.

Elizabeth, Grandma Ginny as she was known by all the grandchildren moved back to Central Florida with son Lester after the death of Riley. They settled in Winter Garden at Orange county Florida. Living close by were her daughters Clifford, Eudora and Ethel. On the cold morning of March 2, 1941 Grandma Ginny, trying to warm herself got too close to the wood burning stove and her dress caught fire. She died from her burns 2 days later. She is buried in Beulah Baptist Church cemetery at Winter Garden in Orange county Florida.

According to family lore and by her appearance Elizabeth was part Choctaw or Cherokee from her father's Temples line. As of this date this information linking this Temples line with any Native American tribe has not been documented and is not verified. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who might be able to prove or disprove this family legend.
