The following is information about record sources and agencies in or near the Lamar County area that have records useful for family research. When you write to a record source/agency, be specific in the information you are requesting, and limit your request to one or two items.

Barnesville-Lamar County Historical Society

Founded: 1973. Programs include restoration and preservation of historic sites and buildings in Lamar County; lectures, oral history interviews, guided tours, craft fairs, and annual tour of homes and "Buggy Days" celebration.

Old Jail Archives and Museum
This collection, located in a museum in the restored jail behind the courthouse, includes Civil War material, letters, newspapers, business records, 19th-century photographs, genealogical records for Lamar, Monroe and Pike counties, Barnesville railroad depot furniture, and examples of Barnesville buggies.

Fayette County Public Library

Washington Memorial Library, Macon, Georgia -- one of the best genealogical collections in Georgia, but their catalog is not yet online.

The University of Georgia Libraries -- online information about their collection. Newspaper collection is fantastic!

The Jefferson County, Alabama, Public Library System online catalog.  This is an amazing genealogical collection with many books on Georgia -- search by keywords for your locale, print the results (one source to a page), then take these sheets along on your next archives or library visit.

Library of Congress online catalog -- a marvelous resource even if you never actually visit this library.

Tennessee State Library and Archives online catalog -- lots of goodies here and they will lend many microfilm reels and books through Inter-Library Loan.

LAND AND PROPERTY RECORDS

Land and property records, combined with tax records, are one of the keys to successful family history research in Georgia. A variety of methods for distributing land were conducted in Georgia, from headright grants to bounty land grants to land lotteries. Land in the Lamar County area was distributed through lotteries.
