Lowndes County was named for William Jones Lowndes (1782-1822) who was a South Carolina lawyer and Congressman and was

created 23 Dec 1825.  County seat is Valdosta.  It is on the southern border of Georgia's with Florida and part of a 13,000 acre

swamp is in Lowndes County called Grand Bay.  This county was originally part of the Spanish Florida colony maintained by the

Spanish Empire.

The first route into the area was on Coffee road which was a trail that was first cut by the Georgia Militia to supply federal troops in

Florida during the Creek Wars.  It was this route that the first white settlers used to settle the area.
