Letter from Surgeon on William A. Harris resignation.

I have carefully examined Major William A. Harris, 14th Georgia Regiment and found him now suffering from an affliction of the heart which in my opinion unfits him for military service.

Excitement of any description increases his trouble. I respectfully recommend that his resignation be accepted.

When and where were you born? Dooly Co. Georgia in 1840.

When and where and in what company and regiment did you enlist or serve? Worth Co. Georgia, Co. G, 14th Georgia Regiment.

How long did you remain in such company and regiment? Until Surrender.

When and where was your company and regiment surrendered and discharged? Appomattox Court House, Virginia.

Were you present with your company and regiment when it was surrendered? No

If not present, state specifically and clearly where you were, when you left your command, for what cause, and by whose authority? I was in Stewart Hospital Richmond, Virginia and was wounded on the 27th day of March 1865, by order of Regimental Surgeon.

How much can you earn (gross) per annum by your own exertions or labor? Nothing 

What has been your occupation since 1865? Farming and Merchandising.

Upon what grounds do you base you application for pension? Age and poverty.

What property, real and personal, or income, do you posses, and its gross value? None.

What is your name and where do you reside? J. J. Ross in Sylvester, Georgia.

Are you acquainted with J. H. Ford, the applicant; if so, how long have you known him? Between 50 and 60 years.

Where does he reside, and how long and since when has he been a resident of this State? Ty Ty, Tift County, Georgia all his life.

When, where and in what company and regiment did he enlist, and how do you know? I found him serving in 1862 when I joined at York Town, Virginia in Co. G, 14th Regiment Georgia Volunteers. 

How long did he perform regular military duty? From time of enlistment to 9th of April.

When and where was his command surrendered? At Appomattox Court House I suppose.

Were you present when it surrendered? I was not.

Was applicant present? I do not know.

If he was not present, where was he? He was in hospital at Richmond, Virginia wounded in hip. I was present when he was wounded.

What property, effects or income has the applicant? To my best knowledge and belief nothing.

Has he conveyed away any of his property in the last four years; if so, what is it, and to whom? I do not know.

What is the applicant’s occupation and physical condition? Clerk in store, bad condition.

Is the applicant unable to support himself by labor of any sort; if so, why? According to my knowledge and belief he is not.

Give a full and complete statement of the applicant’s physical condition that entitles him to a pension. Kidney trouble, Rheumatism and wound in right hip from war.

Who composes family? What property have they? Children’s ages and their earning capacity? Wife and self, do not know.

What interest have you in the recovery of a pension by this applicant? None. 


Application for pension due to a Deceased Pensioner
(To be paid to the Ordinary for funeral expenses and expenses of last illness)

Personally before me, the Ordinary of said County, comes Mrs. Lora M. Knight of said County, who, after being sworn, on oath says that she knew J. H. Ford of said County, and that he was on the Pension roll Tift County at the time of his death, which occurred in Tift County, in this State, on the 26th day of January 1922, and that a pension of One Hundred Dollars was due him and unpaid at the time of his death. That he left no widow or dependant children surviving him, and no estate of any value sufficient to pay his funeral expenses, which amounted to the sum of 304.68 Dollars, as per sworn statement, itemized, hereto attached.

I, J. J. Baker, Ordinary of said County, do certify that I personally know Lola W. Knight, who is a resident citizen of said County, and that she is of a trustful and trustworthy character, entitled to full faith and credit.

 I also knew J. H. Ford while in life; that he was the same person whose name appears on the 1922 Pension roll of Tift County, and was paid a Pension of One Hundred Twenty-five Dollars in said County for 1921 and I now believe him to be dead.

Personally appeared before me James A. Bass of said county of Worth, State of Georgia, who, being duly sworn, deposes and says that he was on the 20th day of September, 1879, a bona fide resident of this State; that he enlisted in the military service of the Confederate States, or of this State, as a Private in Company G 14th Regiment of Georgia Volunteers that while engaged in such military service, to-wit: on Green Briar River while hunting for sick man by himself he was in the State of Virginia on the 25th day of August 1861, he was wounded in the arm on picket and that same was amputated below the elbow the he has not received the payment allowed him for such limb.

Personally came before me William Augustus Harris of the county of Worth, State of Georgia, who being duly sworn, deposes and says that was Captain in Company G, Fourteenth Regiment and that James Bass, the above deponent, was a Private in said Company, and that this deponent knows that said James Bass lost an arm in the military service as said in the above affidavit.

Pension: His wife Nancy A. Goodman filed for his pension in Worth County. W. A. Harris, E. T. Goodman, T. Tipton from Worth County served as witnesses for her. 

Affidavit to be made by the Widow

In person came before me, the undersigned Ordinary in and for the County of Worth Mrs. Nancy A. Goodman who being sworn according to law, says under oath that she is the widow of James I Goodman, who was a soldier in the service of the Confederate States, and served as a member of Company G, 14th Regiment of Georgia Volunteers; that he enlisted in said service on or about the last day of April 1861, and was in the Confederate Army up to last of May 1862. That while in the Army, he was on or about the last day of May 1862 killed at the battle of Seven Pines, Virginia while charging a battery.

Deponent swears that she was the wife of said deceased soldier during his service in the army as a soldier, and that she never married since his death aforesaid, that she became his wife in the year 1857. That she has resided in said State continuously ever since March 20, 1838.

In person came before me, the undersigned Ordinary in and for said County, witnesses W. A. Harris, T. Tipton, and E. T. Goodman (each known to said Attesting Officer as truthful, reliable and reputable citizens), who severally say under oath, that , from their own personal knowledge, Mrs. Nancy A. Goodman of the County of Worth, State of Georgia, is a widow of James I. Goodman, who was a soldier in Company G of the 14th Regiment of Georgia Volunteers. That said soldier enlisted in the service of the Confederate States (or the Georgia State Troops) on or about the last day of April 1861. That while in said service, or by reason of said service in the Army, he lost his life as follows: He was killed in battle at Seven Pines, Virginia on or about the last of May 1862. We further swear that Mrs. Nancy A. Goodman was the wife of said soldier during the service and that she had not intermarried since his death, and that she resides in Worth County of the State of Georgia

How long and since when have you been a resident of this State? All my life.

When and where were you born? Born in year 1841in Dooly County, Georgia.

When and where was you husband born – state his full name, and when were you and he married? John R. Bozeman born in year 1831 in Georgia. We were married in year 1856.

When and where, and in what company and regiment did your husband enlist or serve during the war between the States? May 1861 in Isabella, Worth County, Georgia. Company G, 14th Georgia Volunteer Regiment.

How long did your husband serve in said company and regiment? 9 months.

When and where did your husband’s company and regiment surrender and was discharged? 9of April 1865 at Appomattox Court House, Virginia.

Was your husband present at the time and place when his company and regiment surrendered? He was not.

If not with his command at surrender, state clearly and specifically where he was, when he left command, for what cause, and by what authority? Came home on sick furlough in May 1862 by military authority. Never was able for service in the army after he came home due to chronic Diarrhea.

When and where did your husband die? In Colquitt County, Georgia in 1881.

What grounds do you base your application for pension? Age and poverty.

What has been your occupation since your husband’s death? Trying to farm.

How much can you earn gross, by your own exertion or labor? Nothing.

What property, real or personal, or income do you have or posses, and its gross value? Had small farm which was sold 9 years ago to pay my medical bills.

How have you been supported since death of husband? My sons.

Have you a family? If so, who composes such family? Give their means of support? No family.

Have you ever made an application for pension before? Yes.

How many applications have you made for a pension, and under what class? 1 application under the old law.

Are you acquainted with the applicant, Mrs. Mary a Bozeman, if so, how long have you known her? Yes, 40 or 45 years.

Were does she reside, and how long and since when has she been a resident of this state? Mitchell County, Georgia, all her life.

When and where was she born? In Dooly County, Georgia.

Were you ever acquainted with her husband? Yes.

Where did he reside in 1861? Worth County, Georgia.

When and where was he born? Do not know.

How long have you known him? For 45 years.

When and where did John R. Bozeman enlist in the war between the States, and in what company and regiment did he enlist and how do you know? 6th of May 1861 in Isabella, Georgia, Co. G, 14th Georgia Vol.

Were you a member of the same company and regiment? I was.

How long did he perform regular military duty? About 9 months.

When and where was his company and regiment surrendered and discharged from service? 9 of April 1865 at Appomattox Court House, Virginia.

Were you with the command when it surrendered? I was.

Was John R. Bozeman the husband of applicant present? He was not.

If not present, where was he? He was at home.

If not present, where was he? State how you know this? He was at home sick, he left his command in Virginia in 1862. We were in the same company together when he received a furlough to go home.

When and where did John R. Bozeman die? In year 1881 in Colquitt County, Georgia.

Where did he reside at his death and how long had he been a resident of Georgia at his death? Colquitt County, Georgia. Georgia all his life.

Do you of your own knowledge know that applicant is the lawful widow of John R, Bozeman? I do.

Has she remarried since her soldier husband’s death, and is now his widow? She has never married since his death and is now a widow.

What property, effects or income has the applicant, if any, and how do you know this of your own knowledge? She had no property. I was a near neighbor of her.

Has applicant conveyed any property in last two years or given any away, if so what was it and to whom? She has not.

What is applicant’s physical condition and her chances and ability to earn a support? Her physical condition is bad. She is not able to work for living.

When and where were you born? In 1840 in Pulaski County, Georgia.

When and where and in what company and regiment did you enlist or serve? 1861, Worth County, Georgia., Co. G, 14th Georgia Regiment.

How long did you remain in such company and regiment? From 1861 to 1865 close of war.

When and where was your company and regiment surrendered? 1865 at Appomattox Court House, Virginia.

Were you present with your company and regiment when it surrendered and discharged? Yes

If not present, state specifically and clearly where you were, when you left your command, for what cause and by whose authority? I was right there where the surrender was made.

How much can you make (gross) per annum by your own exertions or labor? I do not but very little.

What has been your occupation since 1865? Just little odd jobs.

Upon what grounds do you base you application for pension? Blindness and poverty. I can see a little but not enough to do any work at all, besides I am crippled and broke down, generally worn out.

What property, real or personal, or income do you posses, and its gross value? Nothing at all.

What property, real or personal, did you posses in 1894, 1895, 1896,1897, 1898, 1899, 1900, and 1901, and what disposition, if any, by sale of gift, have you made of same? I had nothing then and have none yet.

In what County did you reside during those years, and what property did you then return for taxation? Colquitt County, Georgia – had none to return.

How were you supported during those years, 1899, 1900, and 1901? By what little I could do and the help of my friends.

How much did your support cost for each of those years, and what portion did you contribute thereto by your own labor or income? I cannot tell, I contributed very little.

What was your employment during 1899, 1900, and 1901? What pay did you receive in each year? I had no employment.

Have you a family? If so, who composes such family? Give their means of support? Have they a homestead? I have no family.

Are you receiving any pension? If so, what amount and for what disability? No

Have you ever made an application for pension before? No

How many applications have you ever made and under what class? Only this one.

What is your name and where do you reside? J.J. Shiver and G. W. Massey both live in Colquitt County, Georgia.

Are you acquainted with N. T. Calhoun the applicant ; if so, how long have you known him? For 50 years.

Where does he reside, and how long and since when has he been a resident of this State? In Colquitt County, Georgia., from birth 1840.

When, where and in what company and regiment did he enlist, and how do you know? May 1861, Isabella, Worth County, Georgia. We were members of the same company.

Were you a member of the same company? Yes.

How long did he perform regular military duty? From 1861 until 1865.

Were you present when it surrendered? Yes.

Was applicant present? We saw him a few days before the surrender.

If he was not present, where was he? We are satisfied that he was there.

When did he leave his command? For what cause? By what authority? At surrender, close of the war. We were there a few days before surrender. J. J. Shiver was captured, G. W. Massey was cut off from his command.

What property, effects or income has the applicant? Has no property at all that we know of.

What property, effects or income did the applicant posses in 1896, 1987, 1898, 1899, 1900, and 1901, and what disposition, if any, did he make of same? Had none that we knew of.

Had he conveyed away and property in the last four years, if so, what was it, and to whom? If he had any property we don’t know anything about it.

What is the applicant’s occupation and physical condition? Has no occupation, does light work as he is able to do. Right arm has been broken. He is nearly blind and not able to work.

Is the applicant unable to support himself by labor of any sort, if so, why? Old age and crippled in right arm, eye sight in very bad and he is worn out and not able to earn a support.

How was he supported during the years 1898, 1899, 1900, and 1901? By what little he could do and the help of his friends.

What portion of his support for these four years was derived from his own labor or income? I cannot tell but very little.

Give a full and complete statement of the applicant’s physical condition that entitles him to a pension under Section 1254, Code? Old age, infirmity, blindness and crippled in arm and broke down generally.

What interest have you in the recovery of a pension by this applicant? Nothing

Pension: He filed for his pension in Dougherty County, Georgia. Jesse Hobby of Worth County, Georgia and Robert Fulton of Terrell County, Georgia served as witnesses for him. 

Affidavit to be made by Applicant

STATE OF GEORGIA,
County of Dougherty.

Personally appears Daniel Champion of said Dougherty County, State of Georgia, who being duly sworn, says on oath that he was born on the 7th day of October 1834, that he is a bona fide citizen and resident of Georgia, and has been continuously since the 7th day of October 1834, that he enlisted in the military service of the Confederate States on the or about 31st day of July 1861, during the war between the States, and served in Company G of 14th Regiment of Georgia Volunteers, Gen. Thomas Brigade, and was honorably discharged on the 9th day of April 1865; that whilst engaged in such military service, and in line of duty in the State of Virginia, on or about the 4th day of May 1863 he was disabled or wounded as follows: Was shot through the right arm above the elbow and through the right hand and has no use of said arm on account of wound.

STATE OF GEORGIA,
County of Worth.

Personally appears before me, the undersigned Justice of the peace in and for said County, Jesse Hobby, personally known to me to be a trustworthy citizen whom being duly sworn according to law, severally says under oath, that he is personally and well acquainted with David Champion whose application is herewith presented for a pension, that he has resided in this State, that he served in Company G of the 14th Regiment of Ga. Vol., and from his personal knowledge he, while in the line duty, was injured by the service as follows: Was shot in right arm between shoulder and elbow and in the right hand. I know because I was with him when it happened which was in May at Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia, but at my recollection the 4th and 8th of May 1864 I was with said David Champion in army from July 1861 until surrender in 1865. I know him to have been a faithful soldier ready for duty at all times and was in command of said company at time of surrender.

Terrell County.

Personally appears before me, the undersigned Ordinary in and for said County, Robert H. Fulton personally known to me to be a trustworthy citizen who being duly sworn according to law, severally says under oath, the he is personally and well acquainted with David Champion whose application is herewith presented for a pension, that he resided in this State continuously and that he served in Company G of the 14th Regiment of Ga. Vol. Brigade, and from my personal knowledge he while in line of duty, was injured by the service as follows: Was shot through right arm above elbow and through right hand and it renders this arm useless. This I know because I was with him when it happened, which was in May at Spottsylvania Court House, Virginia. I was with said David Champion in Army from July 1861 until I left on furlough just before surrender in 1865. He was present at surrender. I was at home on furlough. 

Physician’s Affidavit

Personally comes before me W. A. Brooks of said County, W. J. Hall and A. R. Hayward, both known to me as reputable physicians of said County, who, being severally sworn, say on oath, that they have carefully examined David Champion and after such personal examination, say that the present condition of applicant is as follows: Complete atrophy of the muscles of the right arm caused form a gun shot wound in the confederate war and that such condition is permanent. Said condition arises from the facts that gangrene taken place in the above disabled wound there by rendering the and such condition that applicant is unable to earn a livelihood. We have treated applicant professionally for Eighteen years, and his condition, as above stated, does not arise from heredity or congenital causes, or from vicious or intemperate habits.

Pension: His wife Martha Ross applied for his pension on November 2, 1910 in Worth Co.   Georgia. G. G. Ford served as a witness for her. She married M. W. Deariso in Worth Co. on   December 1, 1856.
