Personally appears W. W. Horn of Worth county, State of Georgia, who being duly sworn, says on oath the he is a bona fide citizen and resident of said State, and has been such since the 1st day of February 1846; that he enlisted in the military service of the Confederate States (or of the State of Georgia) during the war between the States, and served as a Private in Company G, of 14th Regiment of Georgia Volunteers Thomas’s Brigade; that whilst engaged in such military service, at the battle of Hagerstown in the State of Maryland, on the 15 day of June 1863 or 1864, he was wounded as follows: By a fragment of shell which shot out his right eye and destroyed it entirely – from that time left him blind in said eye.

Harris of the county of Worth State of Georgia, who being duly sworn, says that he was a commissioned officer in Company G, of 14th Regiment of Georgia Volunteers, and that deponent knows W. W. Horn, and that he received the wounds (or contracted the disease) in the military service, as stated in his foregoing affidavit, and that wounds (or disease) permanently disables the said W. W. Horn, as stated by him in said affidavit. Deponent further states that said W. W. Horn is a bona fide citizen of this State, and resides in Worth county.

When, where and in what company and regiment did Cator Lunsford enlist? When I enlisted in spring of 1862 he was there in service and served up to date of wound.

How long within your personal knowledge did he perform actual military service with his company and regiment? From June 1861 to July 1864

When, and where did his Command surrender and was discharge? I do not know as I was at home in Worth Co. on furlough 30 days extended to 60 days

Was the husband of applicant personally present at surrender? No at home, in the fall of 1863 he was wounded badly in the foot and was sent to hospital and then home.

What effort did he make to return to his Command and how do you know this? I am sure he was never able as he was permanently disabled for life.

When and where were you born? 1843 in Thomas County, Georgia.

When and where and in what company and regiment did you enlist or serve? In 1861, Isabella, Georgia., Co. G, 14th Georgia Regiment.

How long did you remain in such company and regiment? 4 years 

When and where was your company and regiment surrendered and discharge? 1865 at Appomattox Court House, Virginia.

Were you present with your company and regiment when it was surrendered? No.

If not present, state specifically and clearly where you were, when you left your command, for what cause, and by whose authority? I was on detail to burn a bridge at a Farmville, Virginia and was cut off by the Yankees but after Lee Surrender I returned to the Court House to get my parole.

What has been your occupation since 1865? Farming.

Upon what grounds do you base your application for pension? Infirmity and poverty, I have not been able to earn support for 4 years. I have Rheumatism and vertigo of the head caused by a piece of bomb shell striking me on the head. 

What property, real or personal, or income, do you posses, and its gross value? Nothing.

What property, real or personal, did you posses in 1894, 1895, 1896, 1897, 1898, 1899, and 1900 and what disposition, if any, by sale or gift, have you made of same? Had none.

In what County did you reside during those years, and what property did you then return for taxation? Colquitt County, Georgia., returned nothing.

How were you supported during the years 1899 and 1900? By what little I could do and by the help of my brothers.

How much did your support cost for each of those years, and what portion did you continue thereto by your own labor or income? I do not know I contributed very little.

What was your employment during 1898 and 1899? What pay did you receive in each year? I had no employment.

Have you a family? If so, who composes such family? Give their means of support? Have they a homestead? No family.

When, where and in what company and regiment did he enlist, and how do you know? May 1861 at Isabella, Georgia., Co., G, 14th Georgia Regiment.

How long did he perform military duty? 4 years

When and where was his command surrendered? 1865 at Appomattox Court House, Virginia.

Were you present when it surrendered? Shiver was not, Calhoun was there.

Was applicant present? No

If he was not present, where was he? He was detached to burn a bridge at Farmville, Virginia.

When did he leave his command? For what cause? By what authority he left? How do you know all of this? About 5 days before surrender, he was detailed by orderly sergeant and the Captain. N. T. Calhoun was present, J. J. Shiver was in prison. 

What property, effects or income has the applicant? Nothing, we are his neighbors.

What property, effects or income did the applicant possess in 1896, 1987, 1898, 1899, and 1900, and what disposition, if any, did he make of same? Had no item and has none yet.

Has he conveyed away any of his property in the last four years, if so, why? No.

What is the applicant’s occupation and physical condition? Farmer when he does anything.

How was he supported during the years 1898, 1899, and 1900? By what little he could do and by the help of his brothers.

What portion of his support for these three years was derived from his own labor or income? I don’t know, but very little.

Give a full and complete statement of the applicant’s physical condition that entitles him to a pension under Section 1254, Code? Old age, poverty, and Infirmity.

How long and since when have you been a continuing resident in the State of Georgia? Near 70 years, all my life.

When, where and to whom were you married? Oct 1, 1865 Worth Co. Georgia to Daniel J. McCranie.

When, where and in what company and regiment did your husband enlist as a soldier in Confederate Army or Georgia Militia? March 4, 1862 in Worth County, Ga. in Co. G, 14th Regiment.

When and where did the Commands of your husband surrender or discharge from the army? April 1865 at Appomattox Court House, Virginia.

Was your husband personally present at the time of the surrender or discharge of this Command? Yes.

Where was his command when he left? Appomattox, Virginia.

For what cause did he leave his command? Lee Surrendered.

What property of any description did you own, hold or control for your use and its cash value? Had a small house and lot in Milan, Georgia, but sold it for $400.00 for support and supplies to live on.

When, where and in what company and regiment did Daniel J. McCranie enlist during war from 1861 to 1865? 1862 – Company G, 14th Georgia Regiment.

How long within your own personal knowledge did he perform actual military service with this company and regiment? April 1865.

George W. McCrannie (or McCraney), Private
Pension: He filed for his pension in Dooly County, Georgia. G. W. Hall of Putnam County, Georgia served as a witness for him.

What is your name and where do you reside? George W. M. McCrannie at Cordele, Dooly County, Georgia.

How long and since when have you been a resident of this State? All my life only when in service as a soldier.

When and where were you born? Telfair County, Georgia January 28, 1839.

When and where and in what company and regiment did you enlist or serve? July 1861 at Isabella, Worth County, Georgia. Co. G, 14th Georgia Regiment.

How long did you remain in such company and regiment? Nearly four years.

When, where and under what circumstances were you discharged from service? I surrendered with my command at Appomattox Court House, Virginia in April 1865.

What is your present occupation? I preach when able.

How much can you earn (gross) per annum by your own exertions or labor? Nothing.

Upon what grounds do you base your application for pension. Infirmity and poverty, blindness and poverty. I suffer extremely with nervous prostrations, and near completely exhausted, then my eye sight is very bad. I can’t see to read or work either if I was able to do so.

What property, effects or income do you posses, and its gross value? None at all.

What property, effects or income did you posses in 1894, 1895, 1896, 1897, 1898 and 1899, and what disposition, if any, did you make of same? I did own a mule, but had to sell it to pay my debts for supplies. I own nothing at all except a scantly supply of household furniture.

In what County did you reside during those years, and what property did you then return for taxation? Dooly County, Georgia., nothing but my household plunder.

How were you supported during the years 1898 and 1889? By my son, who is a poor man and has a family of his own to support.

How much did your support cost for each of those years, and what portion did you contribute thereto by your own labor or income? Probably $50.00, nothing at all.

What was your employment during 1898 and 1899? What pay did you receive in each year? Had no regular employment.

Have you a family? If so, who composes such family? Give their means of support? Have they a homestead? Yes, wife, no means of support except her labor. Have no Homestead.

Are you receiving any pension? If so, what amount, and for what disability? No.

Are you acquainted with G. W. McCrannie, the applicant ; if so how long have you known him? About forty years.

Where does he reside, and how long and since when has he been a resident of this State? Dooly County, Georgia., All of his life.

When, where and in what company and regiment did he enlist, and how do you know? At Isabella, Worth County, Georgia in July 1861, Co. G, 14th Georgia regiment. 

How long did he perform regular military duty, and what do you know of his service as a Confederate soldier, and the time and circumstances of his discharge from the service? Nearly 4 years he was a good faithful soldier. He surrendered with his regiment at Appomattox Court House, Virginia in April 1865.

What property, effects or income has the applicant? He has no property except a scant supply of household furniture. No income, I have seen all he has.

What property, effects or income did the applicant posses in 1896, 1897, 1898, and 1899, and what disposition, if any, did he make of same? He owned a mule which he sold to pay his debts.

Has he conveyed away any of his property in the last four years, if so, why? Nothing but the above mentioned mule.

What is the applicant’s occupation and physical condition? He has nervous prostration and his eye sight is very bad, he is nearly blind.

Is the applicant unable to support himself by labor of any sort, if so, why? He is unable to work by reason of blindness and physical weakness.

How was he supported during those years? By his son and some little work he done.

What portion of his support for these two years was derived from his own labor or income? Perhaps about $50.00.

Give a full and complete statement of the applicant’s physical condition that entitles him to a pension under Section 1254, Code? Nervous prostration, nearly totally blind and general physical weakness.

What interest have you in the recovery of a pension by this applicant? I have none. 

*R. C. McElhannon, Private

Pension: His wife Francis M. McElhannon filed for his pension in Worth County, Georgia. David Champion, J. A. Hobby, and Jesse Hobby of Worth County, Georgia served as a witness for her. 

Affidavit to be made by the Widow
STATE OF GEORGIA,
County of Worth.

In person came before me, the undersigned Ordinary Mrs. Francis M. McElhannon, who being sworn according to law, says under oath that she is the widow of R. C. McElhannon, who was a soldier in the service of the Confederate States, and served as a member of Company G, of the 14th Regiment of Georgia Volunteers; that he enlisted in said service on or about the 22nd day of March 1862, and was in the Army up to March 1864. That while in the Army, he was in March 1864: He died on 22nd day of April 1864 of Pneumonia at Orange Court House, Virginia while in camp and was a member of Company G, 14th Ga. Regiment, Captain W. A. Harris commanding. Wounded serveral times in battle and one of the best soldiers in A. P. Hill’s command. 

Affidavit of three witnesses
STATE OF GEORGIA,
County of Worth.

In person came before me, the undersigned Ordinary in and for said County, witnesses David Champion, James A. Hobby, and Jesse Hobby (each known to said Attesting Officer as truthful, reliable and reputable citizens), who serverally say under oath, that from their own personal knowledge, Mrs. Francis M. McElhannon of the County of Worth, State of Georgia, is the widow of R. C. McElhannon, who was a soldier in Company G of the 14th Regiment of Georgia Volunteers, That said soldier enlisted in the service of the Confederate States (or Georgia Troops) on or about March 1862. That while in said service, or by reason of said service in the Army, he lost his life as follows: He was stricken with pneumonia in March 1864and after several days died and we know this by being in the same company and knowing him during his sickness until he died.

In what company and regiment did you enlist? Co. G, 14th Georgia Regiment

How long did you remain in that company and regiment? To close of the war

For how long of a period did you discharge regular military duty? From 4th of March 1861 to close of the war.

When, where and under what circumstances were you discharged from service? Was discharged from service at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, the 9th day of April 1865

What is your present occupation? Farmer

How much can you earn per annum by you own exertions or labor? Not much

What is your present physical condition and how long have you been in such condition? I have had piles ever since the war, and I am almost blind.

Upon which grounds do you base you application for pension? Base my application on each one of the grounds as mentioned above.

Are you married and have you a family? If so, is your wife living and how many children have you? Give age and sex of children and their means of support? Have wife and five children. Susan Johnson age 35, Sarah Fowler age 33, Lorenzo Potts age 29, Holando Potts age 27, and Horatio Potts age 21 all have to work for their daily support.

Are you receiving a pension under any law of this State, if so what amount and for what disability? Not a pension

Are you acquainted with V. E. Potts, the applicant, if so how long have you known him? Known him 35 years

Where does he reside, and how long has he been a resident of this State? Resides in Worth County, resident of the state all his life.

Do you know of his having served in the Confederate army or the Georgia militia? How do you know this? I know he served in the same company as me (14th Georgia Regiment Co. G)

When, where and in what company and regiment did he enlist? Enlisted in 1861 at Isabella, Georgia, Worth Co., Co. G, 14th Regiment

Were you a member of the same company and regiment? Yes

How long did he perform regular military duty, and what do you know of his service as a Confederate soldier, and the time and circumstances of his discharge from the service? Served with him in army though the war, he was a good soldier. We surrendered at Appomattox Court House, Virginia at the close of the war.

What is the applicant’s occupation and physical condition? Farmer, he is very old. He was injured by tearing up railroad (Orange and Alexander R. R.) causing him to have hemorrhoids.

What interest have you in the recovery of a pension by this applicant? None

Personally came before me T. C. Jeffords and M. J. Crockett, both known as reputable physicians of said county, who being severally sworn, say on oath that they have examined carefully V. E. Potts, the applicant for pension under the Act of 1894, and after such personal examination, say that his precise physical condition is as follows: He is affected with hemorrhoids which totally renders him unable to make a living, he is nearly blind and very feeble, I have known him for 24 years, he is a worthy applicant. We further say on oath that the physical condition of applicant renders him unable to labor at any work or calling sufficient to earn a support for himself, and that we have no interest in said pension being allowed.

Widow’s Affidavit

Personally comes before me Sophia Ross of said County, who, after being duly sworn, on oath says, that she is the widow of J. J. Ross to whom in the County of Worth, State of Georgia, was married on the 23rd day of November 1866, and that she remained his wife, and resided with him to the date of his death in January 18, 1917 and that she has not since his death remarried. At the time of his death he was a resident of Worth County, and he was on the Indigent Pension Roll of the State and paid a pension of $70.00 in Worth County for 1917 per annum, on account of being a soldier in Company G, Regiment 14th Georgia Volunteers of State. Enlisted March 1862. 

Affidavit of Witness to Prove Marriage and to Whom Date of Death of Husband

Personally before me comes J. J. Rouse known to be responsible and truthful person, residing in said County, who after having duly sworn on oath, says: that of their own personal knowledge Mrs. Sophia Ross who made the foregoing affidavit, is the lawful widow of J. J. Ross who died in Worth County in said State of Georgia on 18th day of January 1917, and that she has not since remarried. That she became the wife of J. J. Ross on the 23rd day of November 1866, and that the J. J. Ross was the same man who was on the pension roll of said State Georgia from Worth County when he died.

I, S. S. Story, Ordinary of said county, do certify that I personally know Mrs. J. J Ross, the applicant, and that she is the lawful widow of J. J. Ross, and was on the Indigent Pension Roll of said Worth county, and was paid a Pension from the State of Georgia, Worth County for 1916, and at the time of his death on the 18th of January 1917, there was due to him and unpaid his Pension of Seventy Dollars from the State of Georgia, and I know J. J. Rouse, the within witness, and he is a truthful and trustworthy character and entitled to full credit.
