Where does he reside, and how long and since when has he been a resident of this State? In Mitchell County, Georgia about 61 years

When, where and in what company and regiment did he enlist, and how do you know? He enlisted 1862 in Worth County, Georgia, Co. G, 14th Regiment

How long did he perform regular military duty, and what do you know of his service as a Confederate soldier, and the time and circumstances of his discharge from the service? Over two years he was a good soldier, he was discharged at the surrender 

What property, effects or income has the applicant? None, I live near him and a farmer with his circumstances

What is the applicant’s occupation and physical condition? He has no occupation, his physical is such that he is totally unable to labor. Kidney trouble and nervousness.

How long and since when have you been a resident of this State? All my life.

When and where were you born? In Dooly County, Georgia in 1842.

When and where was your husband born – state his full name, and when were you and he married? Henry Shiver was born in Dooly County, Georgia. We were married in 1855.

When and where and in what company and regiment did your husband enlist or serve during the war between the States? He enlisted in Worth County, Georgia in 1862. Co. G, 14th Georgia Regiment.

How long did you husband serve in said company and regiment? 3 years.

When and where did your husband’s command surrender, state clearly and specifically where he was, when he left command, for what cause, and by what authority? In Virginia in 1865.

Was you husband present at the time and place when his company and regiment surrendered? He was.

When and where did your husband die? In Mitchell County, Georgia on August 19, 1905.

Upon what grounds do you base your application for pension? Age and poverty for the last 10 years. 

What has been your occupation since your husband’s death? No occupation, I am living with my son.

How much can you earn gross, by your own exertion or labor? Nothing.

Are you acquainted with the applicant, Mrs. Shiver? I am.

If so, how long have you known her? About 50 years.

Where does she reside, and how long and since when has she been a resident of this State? She resides in Mitchell County, Georgia., and has resided in this State about 50 years.

When and where was she born? I don’t know.

Were you ever acquainted with her husband? I was.

Where did she reside in 1861? In Worth County, Georgia.

When and to whom was she married? Henry Shiver.

When and where was he born? In Irwin County, Georgia.

How long have you known him? All my life – 62 years.

When and where did Henry Shiver enlist in the war between the States, and in what Company and regiment did he enlist, and how do you know this? He enlisted at Yorktown, Virginia about July 1861 in Company G, 14th Georgia Regiment. I know this because I served in the same company and joined with him.

Were you a member of the same company and regiment? Yes.

How long did he perform regular military duty? About four years.

When and where was his company and regiment surrendered and discharged from service? At Appomattox Court House, Virginia.

Were you with the command when it surrendered? I was not.

Was Henry Shiver the husband of applicant present? It possible he was.

When and where did he leave his command? Did not leave it.

How do you know all this? I served in the war with him. Lived with his family when I was a boy.

When and where did Henry Shiver die? In Mitchell County, Georgia on August 22, 1905.

Where did he reside at his death and how long had he been a resident of Georgia at his death? Resided in Mitchell County, Georgia and lived in Georgia all his life.

Do you of your own knowledge know that the applicant is the lawful widow of Henry Shiver? I do.

Has she remained unmarried since her soldiers husbands death, and is now his widow? She has and is now his widow.

What property, effects or income did applicant posses in 1899, 1900, 1901, 1902 and 1903, and what disposition did she make of it? She has ho property and her income depends upon her children for support.

Has applicant conveyed any property in last two years or given any away, if so, what was it, and to whom? Conveyed no property in the last two years and has given none away. 

What is the applicant’s physical condition and her chances and ability to earn a support? She is a feeble old woman and not able to earn a support.

Where does she reside, and how long has she been a resident of this State? In Mitchell County, Georgia., to my own knowledge since 1860.

When and where was she born? Do not know.

Were you ever acquainted with her husband? Yes.

Where did she reside in 1861? Worth County, Georgia.

When and to whom was she married? They married before war to Henry Shiver, don’t know exact date.

When and where was he born? From best information in Dooly County, Georgia. He is older than myself.

How long have you known him? Since 1859 or 1860.

When and where did Henry Shiver enlist in the war between the States, and in what company and regiment did he enlist, and how do you know this? In 1862 April or May. Co. G, 14th Georgia Regiment, I was present with him.

Were you a member of the same company and regiment? I was.

How long did he perform regular military duty? From my own knowledge I was not present at surrender. 

When and where was his company and regiment surrendered and discharged from service? In Virginia somewhere.

Were you with the command when it surrendered? Was not.

Was Henry Shiver the husband of applicant present? Yes, from reliable information.

When and where did Henry Shiver die? His widow says in Mitchell County, Georgia.

Where did he reside at his death and how long had he been a resident of Georgia at his death? In Mitchell County, Georgia. In Georgia all his life.

Do you of your own knowledge know that applicant is the lawful widow of Henry Shiver? From the best Information – Yes.

What property, effects or income did applicant possess in 1889, 1900, 1901, 1902 and 1903, and what disposition did she make of it? None that I know of. I knew him to be an indiginent pensioner transferred to Mitchell County, Georgia.

What is applicant’s physical condition and her chances and ability to earn a support? She is aged and I think not able to earn a support.

Were you acquainted with her husband? Yes

Where did she reside in 1861? Do not know of my own knowledge.

Do you of your own knowledge know that applicant is the lawful widow of Henry Shiver? I am satisfied she is as they have lived in this county.

Has she remained unmarried since her soldiers husband’s death, and is now his widow? I am satisfied she has and is still a widow.

What property, effects or income has the applicant, if any; and how do you know this of you own knowledge? Don’t know as she has lived in Mitchell Co. for last year but I am satisfied she has nothing.

What property, effects or income did applicant possess in 1899, 1900, 1901, 1902 and 1903, and what disposition did she make of it? Don’t know.

Pension: He filed for his pension in Colquitt County, Georgia. N. T. Calhoun and G. W. Massey of Colquitt County, Georgia., served as witnesses for him. His wife filed for his pension in Mitchell County, Georgia in 1937.

How long and since when have you been a reside of this State? 58 years.

When and where were you born? Feb 1st, 1844 in Dooly County, Georgia.

When and where and in what company and regiment did you enlist or serve? May 1861 in Worth County, Georgia., Co. G, 14th Georgia Regiment.

How long did you remain in such company and regiment? 4 years.

When and where was your company and regiment surrendered and discharged? 1865 at Appomattox Court House, Virginia.

Were you present with your company and regiment when it surrendered? No.

If not present, state specifically and clearly where you were, when you left command, for what cause and by whose authority? I was taken prisoner on the second April in front of Petersburg. 

How much can you earn (gross) per annum by your own exertions or labor? Nothing.

Upon what grounds do you base your application for pension? Infirmity and poverty, about 2 months since I have been unable to do anything at all. Total loss of use of right hand from Rheumatism and wound caused from service in war.

What property, real or personal, or income, do you poses, and its gross value? Nothing, I am not working.

What property, real or personal, did you posses in 1894, 1895, 1896, 1897, 1898, 1899, and 1900 and what disposition, if any, by sale or gift, have you made of same? I had a mule and wagon, I sold them to pay bills.

In what County dduring those years, and what property did you then return for taxation? In Colquitt County, Georgia.

How were you supported during the years 1899 and 1900? By what little I could do with the help of my children.

How much did you support cost for each of those years, and what portion did you contribute thereto by your own labor or income? I do not know, I contributed very little.

What was your employment during 1898 and 1899? What pay did you receive? I tried to farm and received very little.

Have you a family? If so, who composes such family? Give their means of support? Have they a homestead? I have 3 children, they have to work hard for themselves and for me. They have no homestead and have to work by the day.

Are you receiving any pension? If so, what amount and for what disability? No.

Have you ever made an application for pension before? No

How many applications have you ever made and under what class? I have never tried before. 

Re application of J. J. Shiver. 

Georgia Colquitt County, Georgia:
Personally comes J. J. Shiver applicant for pension in the above stated matter and for the purpose of explaining the objections as made by the commissioner in the above stated matter on oath says:

During the civil war while in service applicant was shot and wounded in battle – the shot hitting him just above the right knee.

Some twenty pieces of leg bone were extracted as a consequence. The right leg has been disabled ever since. At times applicant can hardly go on it. This is especially true during changes of weather.

About the first of the present year as abscess of some kind formed in the palm of the right hand of applicant – practically all of the palm of the hand came out. This disabled applicants right hand – he can hardly use it, cannot close the fingers over the hand. 

Applicant has practically no use of the right arm, cant put on his coat without help.

Owing to the limited education of applicant he is not fitted for any kind of business except physical labor – which he is no longer able to perform on account of the above stated facts.

Applicant has no minor children to help him. Applicant has only three children – all grown and have families - each of these children are afflicted. Applicants wife is dead. He has no one to help him.

Personally comes the undersigned, who to me are known to be reputable physicians and being first duly sworn deposes and says that they have this day read the physicians affidavit to the within application. They have this day examined the physical condition of applicant and find same as stated in the affidavit as above forth.

While the abscess in the applicants right hand is no longer sore it has the left hand practically useless.

Are you acquainted with J. J. Shiver, the applicant ; if so, how long have you known him? Since 1855.

Where does he reside, and how long and since when had he been a resident of this State? In Colqiutt County, Georgia for 58 years.

When, where and in what company and regiment did he enlist, and how do you know? May 1861, we were members of the same company.

Were you a member of the same company? Yes.

How long did he perform regular military duty? 4 years.

When and where was his company and regiment surrendered? 1865 at Appomattox Court House, Virginia. 

Were you present when it surrendered? Calhoun was present other was captured. 

Was applicant present? Up to 7 days before surrender. He was a sharpshooter and the rifle pits were captured – all of the sharpshooters being taken.

If he was not present, where was he? Was in prison at Point Lookout.

When did he leave his command? For what cause? By what authority he left? 2nd April he was taken prisoner. We were both in the fight when he was captured.

What property, effects or income has the applicant? ( Give means of knowledge)

None, we are his neighbors.

What property, effects or income did the applicant posses in 1896, 1897, 1898, 1899 and 1900, and what disposition, if any, did he make of same? Had saved a little but lost in his sickness paying the doctor bills.

Has he conveyed away any of his property in the last four years, if so, what was it, and to whom? Has no occupation. Was a farmer when he did anything. Has Rheumatism and an old wound.

How was he supported during the years 1898, 1899 and 1900? By what little he could do and his children’s help.

What portion of his support for these years was derived from his own labor or income? I don’t know, he did what little he could do and his children’s help.

Pension: His wife Elizabeth Jane Shiver filed for his pension in Worth County. William A. Harris, J. J. Ross, John J. Ford, and J. L. Sumner all of Worth County served as witness for her. John Shiver, Mary Shiver, Jacob Shiver, and Nancy Howard all of Worth County made a claim against Elizabeth J. Shiver’s pension. 

Affidavit to be made by the Widow

STATE OF GEORGIA
County of Worth

In person came before me, the undersigned Ordinary in and for the County of Worth, Mrs. E. J. Shiver, who being sworn according to law, says under oath that she is the widow of Manning Shiver, who was a soldier in the service of the Confederate States, and served as a member of Company G, of the 14th Regiment of Georgia Volunteers; that he enlisted in said service on or about the 22nd day of April 1861, and was in the Confederate Army up to March 5, 1863. That while in the Army, he was on the 5th day of March 1863 was honorably discharge on account of pulmonary disease and also Hypertrophy of the heart contracted at Yorktown on that terrible retreat to Richmond, Virginia while in service. He returned home from army and lived about two year until January 22, 1864 when he died of said disease. Deponent further swears that she was the wife of said deceased soldier during his term of service in the Army, and that she has never married since his death; that she became his wife about May 1859, and that she has resided in Georgia continuously since the 7th day of January 1845.

Affidavit for Three Witnesses

In person came before me, the undersigned Ordinary in or for said County, witnesses William A. Harris, J. J. Ross, and Alex Shiver (each known to said Attesting Officer as truthful, reliable and reputable citizens), who severally say under oath, that, from their own personal knowledge, Mrs. E. J. Shiver, of the County Worth, State of Georgia, is the Widow of Manning Shiver, who was a soldier in Company G of the 14th Regiment of Georgia Volunteers. That said soldier enlisted in service of the Confederate States (or Georgia State Troops) on or about the 22nd day of April, he lost his life as follows: While in such service he contracted pulmonary disease and also Hypertrophy of the heart on account of which he was honorably discharged from service on the 5th day of March 1863 and he lived about two years after such discharge at which time he died from said disease. We further swear that Mrs. E. J. Shiver was the wife of said soldier during the service, and that she has not intermarried since his death, and that she resides in Worth County of the State of Georgia.

Personally appears J. L. Summer who upon being duly sworn says that Manning Shiver enlisted in the 14th Georgia Regiment, Co. G, in 1861 or 1862. I do not now remember which year he went off. I do not now remember how long he remained with us. I also remember of him having been discharged from the service on account of bad health. He was a very feeble man.

When and where did the husband of applicant die? In Crisp County, Georgia on December 12, 1905.

Were the applicant and her husband living together as husband and wife at the date of his death? Yes.

Smith if said County, and that said Pensioner was on the Pension Roll of said County at the time of death, which occurred in Crisp County, in this State, on the 9th day of March 1925, and that a Pension of $400 was due pensioner and unpaid at the time of pension’s death, and that pensioner left no widow or dependant children surviving, and no estate of any value sufficient to pay these funeral expenses, which amounted to the sum of $75 per sworn statements fully and complete ITEMIZED hereto attached.

April 9, 1865 at Appomattox Court House, Virginia.

Were you personally present when it was surrendered? No, in Elmira, New York Prison, captured and carried there by the enemy

Was the husband of applicant personally present at surrender? Do not know, he was wounded February 13, 1863 at Fredericksburg fight and we were separated for balance of war

For what cause if you know of your own knowledge was he prevented from returning to his command? The best of my belief his wound prevented him from returning to service, being disabled after war.

When and to whom was he married? (J. J. Ross) Don’t know when but he married Miss Rouse. (J. L. Sumner) Married 1863 or 1864 to Miss E. J. Rouse.

When and where was he born? (J. J. Ross) Don’t know where but think he was born in Worth County. (J. L. Sumner) Don’t know the date of his birth but know he was born in Telfair County, Georgia

How long have you known him? 43 years or more

When and where did he enlist in the war between the States, and in what company and regiment did he enlist, and how do you know this? July 1861 at Isabella, Georgia in Co. G, 14th Georgia Regiment. I lived in same county.

Were you a member of the same company and regiment? Yes

How long did he perform regular military duty? To close of the War

When and where was his company and regiment surrender and discharged from service? 9th of April 1865 at Appomattox Court House, Virginia.

Were you with the command when it surrendered? (J.J. Ross) No

Was the husband of the applicant present? (J. J. Ross) No. (J. L. Sumner) I was not with the command at surrender. I was elected Lieutenant in Co. D, 64th Georgia Regiment. Just after the Battle of Fredericksburg on 13 December 1862, Spring was wounded on that date and sent home with myself ( I being wounded) he was then declared as Enrolling Officer and was not sent back to the command anymore.

Where did George W. Spring die? In Worth County, Georgia in 1890

Where did he reside at his death and how long had he been a resident of Georgia at his death? In Worth County, resided in Georgia all his life.

Do you of your own knowledge know that applicant is lawful widow of George W. Spring? (J. J. Ross) I fully believe, but did not see them married. (J. L. Sumner) I know she is the widow of George W. Spring.

Has she remained unmarried since her soldier husband’s death, and is now his widow? She has

What property, effects or income has the applicant, if any, and how do you know this of your own knowledge? (J. J. Ross) I do not know. (J. L. Sumner) She has a small farm.

What is applicant’s physical condition and her chances to earn a support? Consider her physical condition fair for her age.
