May 23,1863 Letter from Lt. Col. John C. Mounger to his wife:
Hdqrs. 9th Regiment in camp       near Rapidan Station        May 23rd 1863
My dear Lucie,
I know not how to write you in this sad hour of affliction. Ask that God upon Whom you are wont to lean to give you grace that you may be able to bear the sad intelligence of the  untimely death of our dear dear son Terrell who fell mortally wounded in the late terrible conflict  near Chancellorville while leading his company in a charge against the enemy he lingered for nine days and expired. He had Capt. R. P. Lester of his Regiment to write me his situation and expressed a desire to see me immediately that letter did not reach me until the 19th instant when he had been dead 7 days. I first received verbal intelligence that he had escaped unhurt and on or about the 10th instance I received information that he was dead and buried (all this was verbal) . I wrote to the commanding officer of his regiment for information. I received his letter this evening which together with the letter of Captain R. P. Lester I also send you. On receiving his letter of Captain Lester on the 19th at night I left immediately and went through on horseback by 10 o’clock next morning the  Army having fallen back to Hamilton Crossing I could not find any one to inform me and for nearly two days visited every graze I could find to ascertain if possible the final resting place of our dear son. When having failed I rode through to near Guinea Station and at General A. P. Hill’s head  quarters was informed he died at the Lacy house which was used as a division hospital he was not there but owing to the great kindness and attention of Dr. McQueen of the Sixth Alabama Regiment I found his grave with his name inscribed on the head board and the words “Peace be to thy ashes, thy work is done”. I put a small fence around his grave solemnly invoked the blessing of God on his departed spirit and the distressed ones he has left behind and in much distress wended my way back to my tent. I have heard he died contented and satisfied with his fate. I trust his soul rests with God who gave it. Poor dear Molly she has doubtless learned his sad fate before this. I am convinced it is impossible for me to get a furlough at this time. I feel that duty to my family to Terrells family and my feeble health justifies me in tendering my resignation which I will do shortly. Bear your affliction with Christian patience and fortitude it is the fate of thousands - even the imortal Jackson fell in this great struggle. I am prepared to meet the will of heaven concerning me and mine  becoming fortitude and resignation – I have no ambition to serve, no malice to gratify; I go forth I trust with the approval of God to stay and destroy the cruel enemies of my beloved country. When and where this war will end is known only to God. My dear Fannie do not grieve for I trust the soul of thy noble Brother rests with the just in heaven he has only gone ahead of us to make plainer the path of duty. My dear Molly and Sarah remember the looks and nobleness of soul which  ever actuated thy departed brother in every action. I must close for the present and will write again  soon. John is not well, Tom is well but much grieved, give my love to all and accept for yourself the devoted love of your much grieved but resigned husband.
J. C. Mounger
Notes: The first Molly mentioned in this letter is Terrell’s wife. She was Mary Shine, daughter of  A. J. Shine. Fannie, Molly, and Sarah were John C. Mounger’s daughters. John and Tom Mounger  were both in Company H of their father’s regiment.

Letter from Michael J. Horn (Private, Company G, 14th Georgia Regiment) to Lt. Col. John   Mounger:  Camp Gregg, Virginia
May 27, 1863
Lt. Colonel John C. Mounger,
Dear Sir, your letter to Colonel Folsom was received this evening and I hasten to reply to that portion of it addressed to myself. At the time my much lamented Capt. was wounded I was with the Division wagon at Guinea Station some twenty miles from him so soon as I heard he was wounded I hastened to where he was and found to my sorrow that he was not only but mortally wounded. I got to him on Wednesday evening after he was wounded on Sunday morning at the time I got to him he was delirious until he died he often spoke of wanting to see you but said he knew it was impossible for him to do so. He never said anything that he wished you to do for his family more than t see that his business was arranged in a proper manner. He spoke but little about his family. He told me some things to tell his wife if I ever saw her which I shall do, he was perfectly aware of his approaching desolution and often said he was not afraid to die. He was perfectly resigned although he suffered great pain he bore it with patience and fortitude. I stayed by him and administered to him all the comfort and relief both temporal and spiritual that surrounding circumstances would admit of. I often pointed him to that source from whence all goodness flows and told him to put his trust in him for he was all that could do him any good. You want to know weather he wanted his remains carried to his home. He expressed that desire to me on the first evening after I got to him but said nothing more  about it. You also wanted to know if he was buried in a coffin he was not there being no chance for me to procure one. I used every exertion to get even a box but could not even get a box so great was the confusion in the neighborhood. I obtained some wide plank and by cutting them with an  axe, I was able to form in the grave a tolerable good box that will keep the dirt from him, and if you should wish to send his remains home there will be but little trouble in exhumeing him for that purpose. You wished to know if there was any one of his company that would  take his remains home if there was any chance of doing so I will assure you that nothing would afford me more pleasure than to have the privilege of carrying his noble remains to his native home in Georgia and there depositing it, for it to rest in peace till the morning of the Reserection and  mortality put on immtality and the soul ascend to the God who gave it. Colonel if there is any thing that I can do for you in any way for Capt. Mounger all you have to do is to let me know it and I am ready to comply with your request. You know my situation in the army yet I have a noble generous Colonel., always ready to oblige as far as he can for any one who may call on him for a favor and if you wish me to do anything for you in the matter I have no doubt he will grant you the favor if in his power. I greatly sympathise with you in your afflictions and while you have lost a dutiful and an affectionate son we as a company have lost a noble brave and Generous Captain and long will it be before we get such another to command us. We all loved him to a man. Least I weary you I will close by saying this leaves me in tolerable health hoping you are recovering your much wanted health again.
Please let me hear from you again at your earliest convenience.
Believe me sir to be your most humble and obedient servant
M. J. Horn
Ps. The Capt. lived nine days after being wounded he died on    Monday night the 12th inst. At forty five minutes after one oclock   at night.
Colonel, I am requested to say by Capt. Lester that the Chaplain of our Regiment had a long and interesting conversation with the Capt. in regard to his future prospects of eternal happiness and he [said] the Capt. seemed to receive great consolation from the same and expressed a great hope for his future prospects beyond the grave.
