After many years of running back and forth to local libraries, trying to find information on different families in Bryan County, Ga (if they had that film) and then trying to decipher my notes I decided there had to be a better way to store the information. So five years ago I started transcribing all the censuses of Bryan County, GA to spreadsheets. As of this date I have completed 1820, 1830, 1840, 1850 and 1860. Some of these have been published by other persons, but it seems that the information I needed wasn't in the published versions, so I extracted everything available from the microfilm, so no one would have to go back to the library if they had a copy of my censuses. I am in the process of getting them printed so that others may share this information, but in the meantime I thought that some of us on the Internet would benefit if I published the Indexes of the Head of Families (HOF) for the first 30 years. |
In transcribing this censuses, I have to tried to conform as close to the original as possible. As in many counties, some of the names were obviously misspelled, possibly due to haste, unfamiliarity with the name by the census taker, or unfamiliarity with the spelling by the owner of the name. I have tried not to change any spelling of names. All names or initials in doubt are marked with a "?". If you are in doubt about the actual name, please go to the microfilm copy at your nearest library. I took the liberty of: 1) Adding a Dwelling or Family # to each Head of Family, 2) Moving the surnames first, with first name, middle name or initial following (This facilitates tracking each person easier on a computer spreadsheet or database).

Age: Actual age group from the census or "no date" or
a "?" mark were there is any doubt.
