CENSUS RECORDS

 

 

What is a census?

In simple terms, it is a counting of the population. However, over the years, the US census has also collected demographic, social and economic data. In 1790 the first official US census was taken.

 

 

YEAR
CENSUS INFORMATION
1790

Georgia, 4th state to ratify the US Constitution on January 2, 1788 was one of the 13 original colonies. In 1830 Congress requested states to forward all their census schedules from 1790-1830. It was at this time it was determined the 1790 census for Georgia had been lost or destroyed.

1800

No longer exists for Georgia. See notes above.

1810

No longer exists for Georgia. See notes above.

1820

1st Georgia Census that still exists, no Cobb County census. Cobb County was still Cherokee Indian Territory at this time. See 1822 map here.

1830

No Cobb County census. Cobb County was established in 1832 and its land taken from Cherokee County which was created from the ceded lands of the Cherokee Indians. However, there is an 1834 census for Cobb County. 1838 was the year when the Cherokee Indians were forced to move out of their territory and relocated to Oklahoma (i.e. the Trail of Tears).

1840

1st decennial Cobb County Census. The County was divided into 10 districts plus Marietta. The census shows 1,114 households.

1850

This census was the first census to gather the names of all individuals in the household and not just the name of the head-of-the-house. This census records 11,570 residents of Cobb County. There are 14 townships. There is also a separate schedule for slaves (1850 Slave Schedule).

 

Townships: Baits, Big Shanty, California, Coxes, District 20, Lost, Marietta, Merrietts, No 17, (Not named), Oregon, Powder Springs, Randals, Roswell

1860

This census records 10,423 residents of Cobb County. There are 11 townships.

 

Townships: Big Shanty, Coxes, District 1, District 20, Gritter, Lemons, Marietta, Merrietts, Oregon, Powder Springs, Town District

1870

This census records 13,830 residents of Cobb County. There are 10 townships.

 

Townships: Acworth, Coxes, Gritter, Kennesaw, Lemons, Marietta, Merrietts, Oregon, Powder Springs, Roswell District

1880

This census records 20,758 residents of Cobb County. There are 13 townships.

 

Townships: Acworth, Big Shanty, Coxes, Gritter, Kennesaw, Lemons, Marietta, Oregon and Red Rock, Post Oak, Powder Springs, Roswell, Smyrna, Smyrna and Lemons

 

There is also an 1880 Federal Census Mortality Schedule.

1890

The 1890 Census was mostly destroyed by a fire on January 10, 1921. Only one schedule from a Georgia county (Muskogee) survived the fire.

1900

This census records 24,663 residents of Cobb County. There are 17 townships.

 

Townships: Acworth, Austell, Big Shanty, Coxes, Gritter, Howells District, Lemons, Lost Mountain, Marietta, Merritts, Oregon, Post Oak, Powder Springs, Red Rock, Roswell, Smyrna, Vinings

1910

This census records 28,351 residents of Cobb County. There are 28 townships.

 

Townships: Acworth, Austell, Big Shanty, Coxes, Fuller, Gritter, Howells, Lemons, Lost Mountain, Macland, Marietta, Marietta Wards 1 2 3 4 5 6, Merritt, Oregon, Post Oak, Powder Springs, Red Rock, Roswell, Roswell Wards 1 2 3, Smyrna, Vinings

1920

This census records 30,422 residents of Cobb County. There are 27 townships.

1930

This census records 35,282 residents of Cobb County. There are 21 townships.
